Hellcat & Fw 190 seats

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

No matter how nicely detailed a standard kit's cockpit is, limitations of styrene casting often mean that the seat is overscale, with some of the worst examples looking more like they're cast in concrete instead of made of thin sheet metal (in most cases).

SBS Model have built a well deserved reputation for their finely detailed accessories. Along with complete superdetailed cockpits, their growing range also includes some simple improvements in the form of resin replacement seats. These are in a different league to most styrene items in terms of overall accuracy and finesse, and offer an easy and affordable way to give an instant boost to a kit's "office".

The latest sets available are:

48019 - Fw 190
48024 - F6F Hellcat

Both sets include a pair of seats, and the Fw 190 set also includes separate cushions. The parts are produced in light grey resin and the casting is perfect in the review samples. Unlike some SBS seats, these two sets don't feature moulded on harnesses, so you can make your own from foil or paper, or use one of the many aftermarket products available in this scale.

Conclusion
These are beautifully produced and simple to use, even for modellers with little experience with resin upgrades. I almost inevitably spend time thinning a kit's styrene seat for a better appearance, and even then the results are often less than ideal. These SBS Model seats will not only be a huge time saver, but be more accurate. Recommended.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
