Eduard's 1:48 scale B-24 bomb bay set comes in medium sized resealable plastic bag. It is composed of two photo etched frets protected by two cardboard sheets to prevent the content from bending. A4 and A5 sized instruction sheets are provided as well.
This set is very spectacular indeed as it comprises more than 300 parts! Some are very large while others are tiny. Details are crisp and very well rendered throughout on both metal sheets. Obviously this set is destined to modelers who have already some experience with photo etched parts and who have already a couple of similar demanding projects under their belt. Some dedicated tools will be necessary as well of course, such as a flat plier or an Etch Mate.
I won't list all the parts which are present on both frets and will let the accompanying photos speak for themselves, but trust me, with what Eduard have provided, a very spectacular B-24 bomb bay can be achieved, from the biggest part which represents the underside of the wings visible through the bomb bay to the smallest (bomb fuse). The typical "roller-like" bomb bay doors have also been accurately reproduced and I don't think this could have been achieved with any other material than photo etch.
Some plastic will have to be removed from the original model's surface to make room for the new metal parts. This is well explained in the accompanying instructions which are spread over five A5 pages. However, when going through them, one realizes the sheer amount of work that will be necessary to incorporate this set into the revell/Monogram model, but it should be definitely worth it!
Conclusion
This is without doubt a superlative photo etched set. The price may seem high at $54,95 which is almost twice the price of the B-24D kit from Revell (!?), but I do think it is not too exaggerated when you consider what can be achieved with it and that it represents hours of building pleasure.

This makes me regret not picking up a copy of the kit for 10 bucks at a flea market several years ago! For decades virtually no AM for this beast and now all of this- I'm boggled. maybe they'll be inspired to add a bomb bay set for the B-17...

It was the first kit I built coming back to the hobby, and wouldn't mind doing it again, especially with all the AM stuff. Is Revell or Monogram going to reissue the kit?
The Monogram 1/48 B-24D is available at Squadron for $21.99, Monogram 1/48 B-17G $31.46, Revell Germany 1/48 B-17F $29.99 both available at Squadron. I wouldn't be surprised that in a few years if Monogram re-releases the B-24J 1/48.
