Roy Sutherland has released beautifully detailed BarracudaCast resin early-style mainwheels for Bf 109 kits. Nominally intended for the Bf 109E and 'F, I think they may well be suitable for earlier variants too.

The sets arrive in simple zip-lock bags on card backers with generic instructions for working with resin on the reverse. The casting is flawless in all three of the sample sets.

The wheels are produced in 1:32, 1:48 and 1:72. The patterns are designed by Gerry Moss and the hub detail is exquisite in all three scales - the astonishing thing when you view the parts under a strong magnifier is that Barracuda Studios has somehow managed to include all the details of the 1:32 wheels in the smaller scales too.

Preparation looks straightforward. The wheels are joined to the casting plinths by a pour-stub that will also form a flat spot spot to give a weighted look. Just refer to photos and plans to ensure you set the correct "sit" (Bf 109 wheels weren't perpendicular to the ground).

The sets are available now and priced as followed:

BR32436 Price: $8.95
BR48437 Price: $7.95
BR72438 Price: $5.50

Conclusion
Barracuda Studios's new early Bf 109 mainwheels are simply in a different league to injection moulded kit parts. They will provide a noticeable boost to any model and their straightforward nature makes them an ideal upgrade for anyone new to using resin parts. Unreservedly recommended.

I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
