P-51D Exhaust Stacks
P-51D Exhaust Stacks w/Fairing

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

To be honest, I wasn’t entirely convinced the exhausts on Eduard’s fantastic new-tool 1:48 P-51D really needed upgrading. After all, they’re already slightly hollowed out (See Andy Brasier’s excellent pre-release build of the kit HERE), but comparing the new Brassin upgrades with the kit parts has left me in no doubt which I prefer.

The resin parts are not only simpler to install (being single castings instead of made up of two pieces each side), but the hollowed out exhausts are deeper and the pipes themselves better defined, with delicate weld seams.

Importantly, they also appear to protrude through the fairings like the full-sized exhausts do, rather than simply sitting in slots the way the kit versions do without some very fiddly filling. It’s a subtle difference, but a real improvement and a definite time-saver.

There’s a neatly illustrated set of instructions, but they’re hardly needed because the new parts are simple drop-in replacements.

Conclusion
Better detailed and easier to install - Eduard’s Brassin shrouded exhausts are a very worthwhile addition to their new-tool Mustang if they’re appropriate to the version you’re building.

I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...

Hi, Rowan! Thanks for the GREAT REVIEW! I've been using resin and PE "goodies" since the early 1980s. One cannot beat this stuff. I already have my 3 EDUARD and 1 "Overtrees" P-51s all set to go with EDUARD's after-market stuff for these kits. Even though the EDUARD P-51 kits' plastic parts are a pure joy to gaze upon, the PE and resin replacement parts are just so much better. As far as I am concerned, there is NO real choice to be made... Thanks Again, VR, Dennis
