Junkers Ju-88 Wheels
Junkers Ju-88 Wheels - Early & Late Styles

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

Special Hobby have produced two sets of resin Ju 88 wheels as part of their CMK “Quick & Easy” range. The sets are aimed at the ICM and Dragon kits, both of which have appeared in numerous boxings and under different banners. With this in mind, the resin replacements are offered in two styles:

Q48-273 - Ju 88A-1/5 and ‘C-2/4 - Early Mainwheels and Tailwheel and
Q48-274 - Ju 88A-4 (and later) - Late Mainwheels and Tailwheel

The difference is in the tyre treads; the “Early” mainwheels having a conventional tread, while the “Late” ones are basically smooth with thin raised ridges. The tailwheels are identical in both sets. All the tyres are “weighted” convincingly, and will help portray the bulk of the original machine.

The casting is perfect in the sample sets, with crisply detailed hubs that include brake lines. The casting blocks are fairly substantial, so you need to take a little care removing the wheels, but clean-up should be very painless so they'll be suitable for anyone new to working with resin to cut their teeth on.

Fitting the mainwheels could hardly be simpler, but I’d be tempted to reinforce the joint for the tailwheel just to be on the safe side. Each set includes a small sheet of instructions but, to be honest, most modellers will hardly need them.

Conclusion
CMK’s “Quick & Easy” Ju 88 wheels are exactly that - quick and easy. They’re a definite improvement over the ICM and Dragon kits’ wheels and offer a simple and affordable improvement.

Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
