History

126 Wing RCAF was the highest-scoring fighter wing in 2 Allied Tactical Air Force. Between D-Day and VE-Day, the wing accounted for 333 enemy aircraft in aerial combat, and many thousand of ground targets. 11 of the Wing's pilots became Aces. The wing operated Spitfires throughout this time period, mostly Mk XVIs supplemented by a few Mk XIVs late in the War. Most were the high back variant, but a few "bubbletops" found their way into the Wing's inventory during the first months of 1945.

401, 411, and 412 Squadons stayed with the wing throughout its history. 422 served between July 1944 and March 1945. 402 joined the Wing in November of 1944.
