1st Annual WWI Fly-In

In autumn 1992, Guntersville, Alabama hosted the 1st Annual WWI Fly-In. The Labor Day weekend event was organized by the late Frank Ryder as Aerodrome '92. It hosted 54 replica - and an original - Great War aeroplanes: Albatros D.Va, Fokkers and a Pfalz; Sopwiths and Nieuports; an Airco DH.5 and Se5; a Rumpler undergoing restoration. Even an original 1918 Thomas-Morse Scout S4C. That said, the brass radiator Berg D.I was actually shot at the late Champlin Fighter Museum in 1983. It goes along with the rest of these photos.

Unfortunately, work did not afford me the chance to get down there for the entire event, and my camera was not optimized for the flying, and quantity of film was lacking. Yet, it was an extraordinary scene. At one time there were dozens of Great Warbirds airborne, more than any single time since the filming of Dawn Patrol.

I recall there was an Aerodrome '93 but then Mr. Ryder passed away and the event ceased. Enjoy these images.
