601 Sqn. - Suez Crisis

601 Squadron based at Ta Qali, Malta, during the Suez Crisis in 1956.

A mixture of Heller and Airfix kits used. The Diorama now stands with a few others at the Aviation Museum, Malta with a few others. I started with the aircraft themselves which were detailed, scribed and frontal gun ports opened to add more realism to the scene. Cockpit interiors were also scratchbuilt. Decals on the tail booms of the aircraft were fashioned out with individual triangles in red and black… numerals and letters came from the spares box.

The vehicles were modified Airfix kits. Personnel and pilots were altered and modified polythene figures from the Airfix range.

The terrain was made out of a 3 ply wood and then covered with a clay compound flattened to a thin shape with a rolling in and later glued on the surface and left to dry. It was later scribed to simulate concrete apron slabs. Then it was painted with common household emulsions and weathered in acrylics and oils. The rest of the terrain all came from mother nature. The Nissen huts were scratchbuilt.
