SCAHMS 2008 Show Report
The VenueAs I always do, let me spend a minute taking about the venue for the show. The are few shows I have attended that take place in such a relaxing, and comfortable atmosphere as the SCAHMS Calfornia Show. The club has held it in the same place for as long as I have been going; the DoubleTree Hotel in Orange, california. This hotel is litterally an exit past Disneyland (going south) in Anaheim. The hotel was recently renovated and all the rooms are top-notch. I have never had a bad experience staying there. The convention rooms are well lit (as noted above) and very roomy and spacious. This year there was a higher number of vendors than in past years, but the space situation was still very good. There were also a very high number of contest and display entries this year. For the first time the club allowed people to display other artistic endeavors at the show. Painting adorned one wall and certainly attracted a lot of interest this year.
The AuctionEvery year the club hold an auction to help raise money to pay for the event. As anyone who has organized these types of event at a nice hotel knows, they are not cheap. And this year the auction was very successful in generating much needed funds. One piece by Bill Horan went for $2,000 and another by John Rosengrant went for $1600. There were several other pieces sold at the auction and some were very good deals indeed.
