First foray in to modern armour is Tamiya's JGSDF Type 16 Maneuver Combat Vehicle. Going to build out of the box BUT going to do a what if urban digital camouflage scheme using home made masks

cheers Dan...

So the build started. Some simple bits and some clear. The lights are coloured in with sharpie then backed with silver foil - personally I think its not a bad rendition. Glued and held together with tape to let it all go off

have used some of my masks (printed on to masking vinyl) on my test kit - using tri-tone green. They go on ok (3mm is a tad small on 1/35 but will stick with it, could do a mix of 3mm and 5mm perhaps). second green is painted so will mask and paint the 3rd tomorrow to see if it works.

Have you seen the blocky urban camo on their infantry vehicle?
An idea...

Have to love Tamiya kits. Go together really well. This one has moveable steering but parts not overly fiddly... really enjoying it

and fimally my proof of concept for digital camouflage worked (could;ve done with a better contrast of greens but thats not the scheme I am going for). Mask goes on really well, just takes time to cut out!!! The 1/35 scale will give more scope for variation in pattern as well - and yes it will be tri-tone grey (not sure which grey paints yet but I like AK interactive as pre-thinned and Vallejo model air so will look at those).

it is a nice scheme.. wondering about two-tone then but keeping the squares small... hmmmm choices (next stage will be to look at what paints I have and see what goes well together....)

more work. Suspension/drive train & wheels all done (rubber wheels which are ok but at least the hubs are removable to aid painting). On to the turret which, to me, is a really nice shape and calling out to be "digitised"

Decision on paint - AK Interactive going with

Sky Grey (light)

English Grey (medium)

Ash Grey (dark, just off black I think)

with the lower hull/running gear/wheel hubs the English Grey (or perhaps vary depending on the wheel)

Turret progressing (including drilling ~80 holes in the muzzle (not perfect but will get cleaned up a touch))

Primed.. went well until the airbrush "exploded" and splattered all overthe walls... luckily CIF cleaned it off  Need to do the reverse of the tyres then wait for the paints to come in

Robert,

Looks great so far - love that Digital Camo.

Q:
How are you doing the Rubber Tyres ?
Looks like you prime first - Acrylic ?
What do you follow with ?

Thanks
Tom

Cheers Tom. The rubber wheels aren't too bad (not sagged of course). Primed with Ammo One Shot (as is the rest of the kit) and then will use AK Interactive acrylic paint (Rubber Grey). Should be OK but need to be careful of cracking if paint is too thick I guess

Right, paints arrived during the week so first up Ash Grey. AK Interactive 3rd Gen acrylic, thinned with water, about 15PSI. Goes on nicely. Started to cut out the digital masks ready for tomorrow (Sky Grey)

First masks on (dark grey) and 2nd grey (Sky Grey) painted. Still struggling with thinning BUT The AK paints seem to be a bit more forgiving. I know I will have some bleeders cos the 3mm masks are very small and struggle on some of the finer details.

Masked up for the final grey (AK English Grey). This will also be the colour for the lower hull & running gear/wheel hubs
