They really were quite a different looking pair of ships without all their armament, weren't they Si?

The do Russ, they lack that purposeful bruiser look given by that closely packed cluster of turrets.

I think at least the 9.2's will be going on soon, there is some quite fragile upperworks to fit, in the way of new searchlight platforms etc. for the Dardenelles fit.

Si,

Nice progress. I just noticed the cross beams on the superstructure the funnel is sitting through, what is that about and why have such an opening?

Thanks Mark.

The structure between the funnels, and all across that level are the boat racks, I would guess they are open to save weight that high up. Lots of lovely etched cradles to go in there, and boats to sit in them.

The weekend's progress.

The coaling derricks alongside the superstructure have been replaced with better detailed Pontos parts.

Painted.

Closer look at the detail of the steering position. This will not be that visible on the finished model, as it was covered by what looks like canvas screening at that time.

one 12pdr has been fitted on the stbd side, the port gun was replaced at this time with a 3" AA.

As I mentioned boats.

The kit steam pinnace.

And with pontos detail adapted to fit.

It did take a little surgery to both the boat and the pontos rear cabin, including, (unintentionally) to my finger tip.

Secondary Turrets next.

Si,

The steam pinnacle modifications came out wonderful. I hope the surgery on your finger tip was successful..LOL.

Thanks Mark,

I am quite pleased with it, also that I only have one more to do as I think I have removed enough from that particular finger tip!

It is a well done kit, and the etch in the box is quite complete.

Yesterday's progress.

The anchor set I bought to fix the anchor shortages/ shape on the Warspite, will also help to fix the same issue on this lady.

The secondary turrets built, as the 12pdrs we removed from the turret roofs by 1915 the mounting holes have been blanked off.

Painted and camouflaged.

Fitted in place.

More soon.

This week's progress.

I am replacing the kit searchlights with those from the Pontos set, as they more closely represent the 24" units fitted at this time.

and assembled.

Some scrap etch used to make the supports for the new searchlight platforms.

A bit more added, and painted.

searchlight platforms and vents added aft.

Platforms fitted.

Railings and searchlights in place.

again the railings were harvested from spares on old frets. Below, the railings have been filled in with krystal klear to represent the canvas dodgers.

More soon.

Si

Si,

Nice job with those search lights, but won't the Krystal Klear turn clear?

Thanks Mark, They are a lot nicer that the kit mounts, (which I think represent the 18" units she was built with.)

True, the klear, will go clear, but I will then add a touch of light grey paint, they appear to be a light colour, natural canvas, which weather to a lightish grey, or they were camouflaged. Your guess is as good as mine.

Si,

that's quite some progress since I had the chance to check in last time. What a beast she was!!! Very nice, and the paint scheme looks excellent, but for sure pretty tedious to do. But the effort pays!!

Looking good Si

It appears that even though there's some PE included with the kit, that there's plenty of scope for a decent AM set?

Thanks Jan,

A very purposeful vessel indeed mate, The scheme is not too bad, as it can go on as the sub assemblies progress, would be a real pain to in one go.

Hi Russ,

You can build this straight out of the box, there is a decent amount of etch included. a proper Pontos / Infini / Flyhawk etc job. However I reckon as there is so much included in the kit there is no taste for it, especially rom the likes of Eduard or WEM.

I am using bits from a Pontos dreadnought mostly because I am planning to do the torpedo nets deployed.

Agreed Si

a very nice model can be built from the kit contents alone.

But, watching your build, it seems there are few gaps that need filling. EG the searchlights. Also it would be nice to have some turned brass barrels available for the 9.2"s

I'm keeping a list of your additions for future reference. Thank goodness for Northstar

I keep hoping Master Model will come to the party on the 9.2"s

Hi Russ,

I agree this kit does need a little help, big things for me are aerial spiders & coaling hatches, after that gun barrels, searchlights and help for the boats.

I am surprised Master have not chipped in with some 9.2"s, there are some resin's they would go on too.

Cheers

Here is Sunday's progress.

The Krystal Klear has dried clear.

Painted.

Railings for the after platform, as it was enlarged to take the AA gun, suitable railings were sourced from the Pontos Dreadnought set.

The pedestal for the 3" guns, made from scrap etch & plastic strip.

fitted with the barrels from the unused guns that sat on the turret tops.

painted and fitted in place, along with the 12 pdrs & searchlights aft.

More soon,
