Nice last minute work going on here! Unfortunately the gallery hasn't been fixed yet, so I don't believe you can post to it. I plan to leave this campaign open at least until it's taken care of.

Well, my 1/48 Revell Stearman PT-17 is finally done; or I should say it's as done as it's going to get. It's on the shelf, and I'm moderately please with the results; but I am admitting defeat on the rigging. Once again, a model had proven that my talent up to par with my imagination (or pipedreams, if you prefer). The last few days have been very frustrating dealing with the rigging, so instead of seeing if the Stearman could fly (which I seriously doubt); I finished it off & placed in on the shelf until which time I have better skills.

So, here is my US Army Stearman. Not exactly as I imagined it, but done none the less.

The kit provided decals didn't actually fit on the propeller, so I painted it Tamiya Gloss Brown with steal guards, and added the Hamilton-Standard logos from the kit decals. Looks ok.

Oh, and I managed to break the tail wheel off at least four more times!

Well, it has taken since the 12th but I was able to load two images to the Campaign Photo Gallery. I had to load two different images to get it to work.

Hi all,

well, i finally won the guy ropes battle but it was a long one, 2 days to put all of thoose mad wires (many did not want to be glued, although i used cyano) ....
So i began the yellow coats but with paintbrushes it's going to last a bit longer than expected; originally i tried Revell aqua color because i thougt it would be faster to dry but the result was not very good so i came back to Humbrol Enamel.
I guess the campaign is closed now... anyway i'll finish it but let me know if i have to create a post on the forum for the finish

Nice looking Stearman, Nico. What did you use for the rigging? I was defeated by my Stearman's rigging. Just couldn't get it to work!

Technically the campaign is now open until the end of the month due to the gallery issue. I don't like to roll back the end date once I've set it, so you've got a couple of weeks yet. You can do it!

Rhanks Jim for the com

For the rigging i used fishing wires (is it the good english word ?), i don't remember the diameter but it was not the one for sharks . I made a hole in the wings with the end of a X-atco, dunked the end of the wire in Cyano and put it in the hole. When dried, i cut the wire just a bit longer than needed and glued the other end on a second hole.
When the second end has dried, i heat a metalic wire with a candle and after several seconds a appraoch it to the rigging (very slowly and carefully, it must not be to close) when close enough, the rigging is drawned tight because of the heat.
You have to be very very cautious because if you get to close the rigging melt ! And more you have riggings attached, more the danger grows .... I ruined many riggings before all were well glued !

I scratched a tool from an old paint brush in the handle of which i fastened a thick metalic wire, i'll post a pic of it.

Hi all,

well, my Kaydet is not yet finished but close to, i finally put the last yellow coat yesterday morning, the 6th Humbrol one (after the 2 Revell "aqua color" i used first) so it was 8 coats on that plane, with paint brush ! I never had to do so many in the past....i'll not buy a yellow kit for a while !
I also painted the riggings in mat black and finished the blue tail.
I have to paint some details now but not much, engine and wheels are to be glued but are already painted. Then i'll put the deco on...

Firstable, the tool i scratched to drawn tight the riggings (very simple to make it, an old paint brush and a metal wire)

Hi all,

Yesterday evening I put the deco
The red strips were a bit straight.....

Now I just have to do the weathering which will be light, I guess these training planes were well kept, weren't they ?

Fantastic job, Nico. What are those things on the guide wires that look like toothpicks? My 1/48 Stearman didn't have anything in the instructions like that.

Thanks a lot Jim, very kind words.

You talk about the yellow rods between each wings ?
Well, there isn't any in the 1/72 instructions either, but they exist on the plane, i don't know their english name, neither the french one, maybe "wire-strainer" ?
I used my thinest styren rod but it still be too thick for 1/72 scale. Anyway, it's usefull to strenghten the riggings web
