I really like the Flory washes, and use them for my sludge washes. Just one thing to keep in mind that I've found, once you apply them, they seem to stain the surfaces where no matter how much you rub, there is a slight discoloration. Exactly what you want in almost every case.
Past that I still use oils for the rest of my weathering. And by oils I mean Model Master enamel paints, not artist oils. Just too much linseed oil to have to deal with. Drying just takes forever.

Hi Joel, getting acquainted to the Flory washes. A gloss undercoat seems to be obligatory to be able to clean off what you don't want.
As far as oil paint is concerned our paths seem to diverge here
I love the real deal and hardly have any enamels left in my paint collection. Just seems to work and wash better.

About those Flory washes, aren't these the former Pro Modeller washes? I got a few bottles of those, good stuff! I really like how they're non-permanent until sealed with a clear coat.

I think they were originally issued by Pro-Modeller, this is first time I have bought them though. They work best on a gloss undercoat, then you can removed just about all you want to remove. Sealed with matt varnish it gives a very nice effect.

I still occasionally use Humbrol's metalcoat enamels, gives a nice metal look when polished. I seem to remember someone who even hand painted his models using enamels and you really couldn't tell that he hadn't used an airbrush. I love doing the washes and pin washes with oils though and thinning them down with good grade oil thinners makes for fast drying time.
All a question of what is easily available and what you like working with. I seem to spend too much much money on paints

Funny, Don't remember Hornet ever carrying one of these as part of her Airwing. Great job on one of... actually my only, favorite Russki aircraft. Gotta love a big, ugly, heavily armed and armored, flying tank! Al

Phil Flory has always made the Flory washes. As a matter of fact the "Earth" comes from his backyard. Other dirt he's tried just doesn't have the same effect, Phil has no idea why.
Anyway, Phil Flory was Originally Pro Modeller of UK. He was sued by Revell Inc. to stop using that name as they had a North American copy write on it, but Phil had one in the UK. Anyway it basically came down to Phil not wanting to spend mega funds fighting Revell who would eventually win as they had way more funds to fight the court battles, so he dropped the name and went with Flory Models instead.

Hi Joel,
I remember these washes being advertised by "Luchtvaart Hobby Shop" near Schiphol. I never got hold of them though so when I saw them advertised by Flory Modelling I ordered there. Thanks for explaining the whole story.
I'll stop the weathering now, just some armament and antenna plus wires and the il-2 would appear to be finished

Just about all done here. Antenna and gunner's canopy wire rigged. Armament fitted. Wheels made dusty with pigments.
I couldn't resist comparing the il-2 with it's modern day relative: the Su-25.
