If you haven't glued the fuselage together yet, either Milliput or Superglue applied from the inside works best.

Being as I was going to be build an SBD-3 anyway, I decided to join this very appropriate and timely campaign. I was really psyched to do a Coral Sea or Midway plane. Unfortunately that was delayed a few days when upon inspecting my accurate minatures kit I discovered that what I had was an SBD-1 kit with -3 box, instructions and decals. So ive checked around and made sure I have everything figured out and now I will be building an SBD-1. Probably in USMC prewar scheme featuring the yellow wings and aluminum lacquered everything else. I like color but this is taking a step out of my comfort zone. The idea has grown on me over the last couple days. Ill be ordering decals in the next day or so but in the mean time let the festivities begin...with some parts washing

Just got a little envelope from Australia. Want to try something new with this build, so I ordered Montex masks. I've never used their product before but I would like to paint insignias on rather than resort to decals. We'll see how it goes. The results I've seen from others are stunning so I'm hopeful.

After giving the DC-1 a good sanding down, I'm trying something new. Vallejo's silver. I think that I still need airbrushing practise, because it's gone a bit orange peel. That's still better than how it looked last week.
The DC-2 fared a bit worse
There's a nasty drip under the right wing which needs cleaning ip.
I think that if I polish these with very fine sandpaper and apply some Rub 'n Buff they might just begin to look good.

Silver paint takes several days to really cure. The DC-1 you should be able to produce a very acceptable NMF using a polishing set. Grits: 4,000, 6,000, 8,000, & 12,000 applied wet. The DC-2 really has a lot of Orange peel. Certainly won't be an easy fix. You might consider striping it once again, then priming with Tamiya gray primer. Once dry, use the polishing set, then a coat of Alcad black primer. Then Alcad 11 Aluminum as your base color. Once dry, buff out.
Take a look at Peter's 1/32 scale Tamiya's Big Beautiful Doll P51-D, it was done that way.

Jessica, Nice save on both aircraft. On the DC-2, the left wing there is a discoloration by the outer yellow bands that show in both pictures. Is that in the paint, or just something created in the digital photography process?

I think it's a combination of some surface roughness that didn't completely polish out, silvering (the decals were still wet when I took those pictures) and reflection from the flash. I've very carefully put some fresh Rub 'n Buff on and we'll see whether that improves the look.

The DC-1 would be done by now if my brilliant idea to use punched circles of painted trim film to do the wheel hubs had worked the way it was supposed to. As it stands, I need to redo them, probably with paint.

Yes. I thought that since the hubs are circular a little disk of painted decal would work nicely. I ran into trouble because the film I used likes to roll itself up under the influence of setting solutions. Perhaps I'll try the boiling water trick instead.

Okay, that's done with. Here's the DC-1 and DC-2 nose to nose. I'll get some better pictures later this afternoon once I have a new sheet of faithful blue background paper.
