Thanks, drabslab!
This is my largest base which I sometimes use to show 2 jets (have a look at my Drakens on page 1 here), but in fact the concrete is more suitable for 1/32 or 1/35. A base 3 or 4 times bigger than this would need a lot of space on my expo table and it also needs to be stowed away and transported. And with markings I could only use it for this one purpose.

Yep, it's big but have a look at the following link:

https://www.dumaplast.com/en/brands/waterproof-tongue-and-groove-wall-cladding-dumawall

I am using this stuff for my 1/48 scale airfield (well, what once upon a time should become my 1/48 scale airfield).

This stuff is the correct color, is fairly solid, fits very nicely together, can be put on any flat surface, and can be set-up/ stored away in a few minutes.

It has been really quiet in this thread the past 12 months but today I have something new here. I would like to show you my latest build, the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG 21bis from Eduard in 1/48 ....

.... the MiG 21 is one of the legendary military jets in history. It made its maiden flight in 1959 and was flown in about 60 countries around the world and some are still in service. It saw active combat in several wars, mostly known are the Vietnam War and the Egyptian-Syrian-Israeli conflics. It's one of the most produced supersonic aircraft of all time in countless variants. A total of 10645 aircraft were produced in the Soviet Union (in Moscow, Gorki (today Nishni Novgorod) and Tiflis), plus licence builds in India and former Czechoslovakia. China built the MiG 21 as J-7 until the 1990's. The last NATO country which operates the MiG 21 is Romania, but as far as I know, all aircraft are grounded now. The MiG 21bis was powered by one Tumanski R-25 Turbojet engine with a thrust of 69 kN with and 18 kN without afterburner. It had a max take off weight of 9800 kg and could reach a speed of 2237 km/h at 13000 meters. The range was about 660 kilometers without a drop tank, service ceiling was 17500 meters. The armament consisted of one Gryazev-Shipunov GSh 23 autocannon, caliber 23 mm with 200 rounds. It could carry bombs and rockets on 4 hardpoints. The MiG 21 was produced between 1959 (F-13) and 1985 (bis) ....

.... I have built MG-129, a MiG 21bis, of HävLLv 31, Kuopio Airbase, Finnish Air Force in 1981. Finland purchased 26 MiG 21bis between 1978 and 1981 ....

.... Eduard came out with this kit in 2011 as a Profi Pack. It consists of 435 parts, but not all are used for this finnish version. Especially weapon parts are left in the end because there are several options for missiles and bombs. Building this kit is not a big deal it just needs some time because of the big amount of parts. The only problem I had was getting the fuselage halves together. At the front there's still a small seam to see but the rest goes together quite easy. With this Profi Pack comes a piece with pre-coloured PE parts which I have not used all. As I closed the cockpit I have used the PE parts here only for the seat belts and left the other parts for a future MiG 21. The ejection seat in this build has 17 plastic and 14 PE parts btw. Eduard offers for this Profi Pack some very nice decal options. Beside the finnish machine that are aircraft from Poland, Hungary, India, Croatia and Bulgaria. Hmmm .... I definitely need another MiG 21bis ....

.... the paints I have used come mainly from Vallejo. It was not easy to come close to the right tones because the finnish MiGs were repainted during their service time. Here a special thanks to our Pasi Ahopelto for his advices! Kiitos Pasi! Though I couldn't get all the correct paints he suggested I've tried my best to come close to the real thing. For the underside I have used FS36440 (Vallejo 71121), for the upperside I have used Green FS34102 (Val. 71289) and Brown FS30051 (Val. 71249). While Green is fine, that Brown is a bit too "reddish", it should be more "blackish" as you can see in the photo of the original aircraft above. But after all I'm satisfied with my paint job on this bird. Green for the Radom is RAL 6020 Chrome Green from Revell (No. 362), which was the closest I could find in my paint box. Final coating was made again with Clear Flat Varnish from Marabu. I have decided to hang 2 different air-to-air missiles at the hardpoints plus a 480 liters drop tank. I'm pretty sure that the MiG never flew in this combination but it looks good to me. The main decals for this bird are made by Cartograph and give no problem. They are really thin, so they must be applied carefully. I have decided to use only some stencils on the missiles because they were out of focus, just black and red lines. They are not made by Cartograph. I have checked stencils in other Eduard kits which are okay. So here I probably just got a bad set ....

So, again I say "Большое спасибо!" and "Paljon kiitoksia!" for stepping in and walking around my newest member of my Plastic Air Force. Hope you enjoyed it!

Happy modelling!

Torsten,
All your builds continue to impress this old Car Modeler as they always have.

Your Jaguar just blew me away both the camo paint scheme and your ability to weather just enough so that you brought it to life. I'm just super impressed with the final results.

As for your Mig 21bis, another excellent museum quality build and finish. Once again your basics are flawless in execution.

As for your FiAF MiG and Draken brothers in Arms, they do make quite a statement.

Really nice work Torsten.
I like the mix of Sidewinder and AA8 missiles on the Mig.

Thanks for your feedback, guys! Sorry for my belated answer but as you know, the Kitmaker Network was a bit on the slow side the last days ....

Magnus, indeed, I could call this side "My Scandinavian Corner" if I look at my latest models here, wether it's Saab, Swedish or Finnish AF. Still have a Viggen and 2 Draken in my stash. Will be build sometime in the future. One Draken is planned as a bird of the Flyvevåbnet (Danish AF) but I still have nothing Luftforsvaret (Norwegian AF) .... But I will leave this cozy scandinavian corner soon for the build in the campaign "65 Years Bundeswehr". I'll plan to build an F-4 F Phantom II with Iron Crosses here ....

Joel, my dear friend, thanks for your kind words, too! Yes, I'm really happy how the MiG 21 turned out. Concerning the colours, the finnish MiGs were repainted after some years with finnish paints. Here it's more the late painting from the late 1980's with the early markings of 1981. MiG 21 and Draken side by side make a statement for sure ....
Concerning my tanks, I think a bit of weathering here is a "must" though I'm no fan of it and my skills are surely limited. For me the best weathering I made on the truck MAN 5 to gl. Okay, this model means something very special to me, maybe that's why.

Stephen, thanks for your comment. I have used a pair of R-13 (inner pylons) and R-60 (outer pylons) air-to-air missiles on MG-129. They are soviet made. When I was at the FiAF Museum in Tikkakoski last September these missiles were hanging on a wall. Must look where I have the photo.

Happy modelling!

Hi Torsten,

I haven't really spent any time until just recently in this forum, so just seeing your jet collection. Very, very nice, and what a variety! I, too, have a 1/48 Eduard MiG-21bis, the limited edition 'around the world' kit, still untouched in its box. I'd really like to break that one out someday soon, but unlikely with all the other builds I have partially in progress already!

Thanks for stepping in and your kind comment about my builds, Curt! As always I try my best. This MiG 21 was the first I have built. Still have 2 or 3 other older from Academy which want to be build one day.

I hear you, speaking about all the kits on your workbench! Usually I have only 2 kits on my bench at the same time, or, when it's a bigger kit like a jet or a tank, it's only 1 kit at a time. I would loose the overview with 3 or more kits.

I will copy this thread soon to the "new forum" and continue over there. Opposite to my Assembly Line Thread I have repaired this one completely from the Photobucket issues a few years ago. Hope to see you over there also!

Stay all safe, guys!
Torsten
