There's a green-eyed monster stomping around at Castle Aeroscale tonight... I have to admit I''m rather envious of Jean-Luc over this one - Hippo's lovely Gotha G.V!

A minor point. Easily fixed with plastic sheet.

The G-V had no walkway between the Pilot and the rear Gunner. The Fuel Tanks for the engines blocked the way. From the Windsock Gotha datafile the bulkheads never changed, only the top cover of the fuselage. Look at the pictures.

On the G-Va the walkway was restored. The G-Va had the Box Tail Assembly.

For those of you thinking about upgrading the generic kit motors, they should represent the Mercedes D.IVa 260hp types. I did a bit of how to with the "Planet Models" 1:48 Rumpler C.IV that carried one of these engines.

Planet Models Ru C.IV build.

". . .Note a highly detailed version of a 1/48 scale 260hp Mercedes D.IVa is available through Copper State Models. In this case I used an extra cylinder bank of the Copper State Models item to replaced the kit cylinders. Note, you are not going to see much of the crank case unless you cutaway a cowling. Now to the resin fuselage former. I modified mine. I cut out the center area including the etched square and the area immediately above it. This gives the former a “U” shape. You can add some lightning holes on each side. Then I notched the area of the engine crankcase and when in place it sits in the crotch of the modified fuselage former. The carburetor air induction pipes have upholstery thread wound and glued in place around them. ( only goes half way down the pipe and ends where the diameter gets smaller.) When the winding thread is dry paint it flat black. This represents asbestos / tar soaked chord. This kept heat from the motor away from the inducted air. Also add a brass rod in to the front of the crankcase to represent the prop shaft. . ."

I would refer to it as "Snakes on a Plane."

No bombs? What were they thinking? This is not a Lancaster with bomb bay doors that can be closed. The bombs on the Gotha were hung externally and are particularly visible, were in fact a feature. NO BOMBS? The Roden kits all had lots of bombs in various sizes for the 1/72 scale kits. Does the PE set include the attachments for the bombs? Pretty much essential in this scale as they are difficult to replicate from scratch. Black mark for Hippo.

I notice the eisernes cross decals have black edging around the white border. Surely this is incorrect?

I have just seen the review

That's a very nice kit but what counts most is the subject

Where you can find ready made rigging, because I don't want to mess again with streched sprue

Nick, for rigging I like smoke coloured invisible sewing thread.

James agreed but we are not dealing with a company that puts everything into the box. And at nearly $70.00 for a 1:48 bomber maybe Hippo knew what they could afford. They themselves may have some extras planned.

Since Mirage has two sets of bomb stores it reminds me that even in the "modern age" aircraft often we see companies doing basic kits and another company doing the weapsons and bombs. The bomb racks will be something that Part could do but quite possibly our good man Wotjek will have something up his sleeves.

As to the crosses bombers definately walked a different road. Even the German Naval two seaters had some with black outlines as the surrounding lighter colours muted the demarcation of white and lt. Blue and / or grey. The FF33e "Wolf Cub" was a prime example of outlined crosses. I'll have to check my files to go further.

With the larger Bombers often if they had the dark coloured camouflage some manufacturers would only employ the white borders with empty centers showing the camouflage.

Nick if your looking for stailess steel or even brass wire, several model rail road distributors sell these in packs of 6-10 each. "Whalthers Distributors" here in the US has them and even Caboose Hobbies here in Denver sells them. (Both are on the internet.)

When you have a situation where "we are not dealing with a company that puts everything into the box" and they make a serious omission, I reckon a reviewer should call it like it is. How will we ever get better kits? Eduard released a correction canopy for the Me109E because the modelling community said they got it wrong. Aim for excellence! Do you think bombs on a Gotha are something we should expect not to get in the kit?

I have checked the Gotha! Datafile Special, Alex Imrie's German Bombers of World War One and Dr Merril's Americal Gryphon instruction booklet from their comprehensive Gotha decal set (covering 43 different Gothas) and couldn't find even *one* Gotha with black edging around the iron crosses.

I have mentioned the absence of bombs and bomb racks in the review...
"Surprisingly for such an aircraft, no bomb racks and bombs are provided! This is a real shame since the racks are quite complex. It would have been nice to have some photo etched ones included."

Maybe I should have added this in the "minus" box as well.

Since Jean-Luc did call it like it is by mentioning the lack of weapon stores & racks, I believe he did a fine job. But I look forward to seeing your next review.

Yes the lack of bombs was mentioned in the review, but it wasn't given proper weight in my view. As Jean-Luc admitted, it didn't get noted in the 'Lows' summary at all. That is really my point, for the subject of the kit, lack of bombs is a serious omission. I was surprised Stephen that you thought it was OK to leave things out of the box - that was what I meant when I said "call it like it is".

Then we will see your review of this kit in the future. Good luck with that.

Moving on with the subject of the Gotha I ran across a piece by the owner operator of the Aero Conservancy, Mr. Charles Gosse and it is an excellent read for those interested in the Gotha. Note the fabric sample.

Why do you think I will be reviewing this kit? I am just commenting on the Aeroscale review.

The fabric cross sample you posted appears to have been cut around the white edging, it is not on a bigger piece that shows a black edge.

Never said it did have the black edge. I just posted an image for general observation.

Note oxygen generators were originally developed for Gotha Bomber operations. (Darn it, another thing Hippo didn't put in their kit.)

These observations are courtesy of Mr. Joe Gertler.
". . .those are my original photos that I took of one of my oxygen generators in my backyard, a few years ago. (Still shows my white sneakers in the bottom of the first one.) Had four or five of them over the years, but this was the last/best, and still in the original crate, which I wrote on...They have all moved on to various museums and collections. I've been looking through my files for the general dimensions, which I know are in a file or email here, somewhere...Not found.....yet. I had two original Gotha cockpit items on a web auction just a bit ago, but with this economy no bids at well under what earlier ones had sold for. Not that there was ever a LARGE market for Gotha bits.... Most went to museums."
