The Roden 1:32 Siemens Shuckert D.III kit has well defined overall pieces, plastic has minor flash and needs the usual clean up. It also has finely moulded cockpit and some detail parts. I will discuss and also reference the variations you can make to alter this kit into either this late production verison the early production D.III variant or the later model D.IV.

Fantastic review Stephen ! It was while worth the wait . Covering the early D.III and the late models as well as the D.IV was a plus on making the changes to the kit .

Thanks for your knowledge on the subject and sharing !

Will have to get two kits now !

Hi Steffen

All present and correct now - but that "1:48" got me excited too!

Still - nice Review Stephen! I definitely want one of these beauties!

I assume your referring to the 1:48 gun sights on a 1:32 kit?

Hi Stephen

No (of course, coming across all our excitement late thanks to the TZ difference, you wouldn't know what we were on about) - you set the scale on your thread title for 1:48. Roden should take note of the interest...

All the best

Aeroscale Member Tom Sollers of Microsculpt.com has this to say about some conversion sets.

Quoted Text

Greetings, everyone!

FWIW, I ran across this over at Roll Models for Plastic Models and all Related Items!. Under their "Loon Models" line, they have released two conversions for Roden's 1/32 SSW D.III:

Loon Models 1/32 'Master Series' Correction/Conversion/Detail Sets

LO32006 — Siemens-Schuckert D.III early conversion including early full-cowling(2), engine brace & supports, unvented spinner, early wingtips & ailerons and early tail pieces for Roden kits. $23.00 USD

Loon Models 1/32 'No-Cut' Conversions

LO32207 — Siemens-Schuckert D.III Standard & Late conversion with standard and late cowlings, engine brace & supports, unvented spinner and early horizontal tail for Roden kits. $18.00 USD

There are no images, so I cannot comment on accuracy or quality.

Cheers!

Tom

A close look at the lozenge decals will show that the undersurface pattern has been flipped over / mirror imaged. Should be the same as the upper surface.

Stephen has been very polite in his review about the colouring of the lozenge decals. I realise this is quite a contentious topic but the Roden colours are quite different to other manufacturers that are generally regarded as accurate eg Eagle Strike. Also quite different to Doug Baumann's lozenge decal colours that went through an extensive development process over at The Aerodrome under the guidance of Dan San Abbott and others.

The lower surface lozenges in my kit suffer from overlapping colours which look quite odd.

James I can't fault the overlap too much. To a degree it is present on the real printed examples of WWI. It was a safe guard against gaps in the colours.

I have it in the clear. Its a section of under surface lozenge fabric from w/n 6746. Anyone else have a problem seeing it? If your seeing it at a work /employment station their firewall may not allow you to see it.

No I am at home. Curiously the photo came up OK a couple of days ago, but when I came back to comment it was gone. Maybe the bandwidth has been exceeded for the hosting site?

From memory, the colour overlap on the fabric was thin and not particularly noticeable. By comparison the colour overlap on the Roden decals is quite pronounced (on the undersurface) and affects some colours and not others. It doesn't really mirror the fabric at all in my opinion. But then I guess its all a bit subjective isn't it. Personally I would replace the kit decals.

Viewers can judge for themselves:

As has been noted the Roden bottom lozenge strip has the pattern flipped and both upper and lower sets are several shades off the mark.

I recently purchase another of the Loon Models SSW D.III resin upgrade kits for Roden's 1/32 SSW D.III.

I had the #LO32006 — Siemens-Schuckert D.III early conversion including early full-cowling(2), engine brace & supports, unvented spinner, early wingtips & ailerons and early tail pieces for Roden kits. $23.00 USD. Review done by me

I just picked up the Loon Models 1/32 'No-Cut' Conversions #LO32207 — Siemens-Schuckert D.III Standard & Late conversion with standard and late cowlings, engine brace & supports, unvented spinner and early horizontal tail for Roden kits. $18.00 USD. Review done by "Thegirl" Terri

With the 2 Roden kits I have, I will add these Loon sets to my upcoming builds.

Well look what just walked through the front door!!! Terri you have been gone too long. I am remodeling the cafe and was scraping down the pink paint in your corner wishing you were there to help.

Yes, test fitting is ongoing at this time. Cowlings, ailerons, bits and pieces all need to be looked at. Going to the ailerons, elevators and rudder, when you separate parts that are moulded together as one unit you often get flat edges at the cut lines and the originals had cupped trailing edges or beveled leading edges to fit in the cupped trailing edges. When you try to bevel a part to fit it will loose some depth in chord (distance from leading edge to trailing edge) and takes away from the over all area of a part. This can cause a misfit / mismatch of parts. I will attempt to show you the general improvements that can be added when augmented by detail or upgrade parts that are designed to add that scale realism.

I'll start separate threads on the builds.
