If you are looking for a nice base for your figure, no matter whether for a large, 75mm figure or for a wargaming mini, Polish company Basicks is good please to check.
They offer huge variety of bases in different shapes, sizes and themes. One of their latest additions to the product line are 40x40mm Mystic Bases.
40x40mm Mystic Bases come in two kits – you can buy whole set that contain all nine bases from this size and theme or, if you don’t need that many of them, you can decide to choose the set containing only two randomly selected bases.
The full set contains nine bases. They are considered as separate products and can be used as 40x40 square bases for your figures but here comes interesting part: all 9 bases placed in a way as show on header picture create 120x120mm part of terrain representing part of some ancient road or path - overcame by forest and surrounded by ruined remains of a mystical civilization.
Starting from top left and going right bases show:
1. Gear-like sculpture, maybe part of fallen wall covered by plants and creeping ivy or other vine
2. Part of damaged window covered with ivy with small lamp partially buried in the ground
3. Gear shaped steps covered with vine and dirt with small lizard on the lowest step
4. Partially buried chest with, again, piece of broken window and road on the corner
5. Cobblestone road with mystical markings carved in it and small plant in a corner
6. Road on one side and with goblets, ewer and chest covered by vine on the other
7. Road with few small plants on the sides
8. Chest partially buried in the ground with small lantern placed next to it in the center of the base and road in the corner
9. Fallen, buried and eroded pillar or stone table of some kind.
Each base is kept in nice mystical mood. There are no elements that would dominate over the figure one is going to put on the base neither they are dull and boring – even the bases showing only the road are varied by the presence of patterns.
Patterns and shapes visible on most of the bases from this set disqualify the product line as a historical bases – they have obvious fantasy/sf character. However you may use them with any figure that is not strictly historical – they don’t have any features binding them with specific universe or realm.
ASSEMBLY AND PAINTING
No assembly is needed, unless you want to use whole set (or parts of it) as a one base.
DETAILING AND QUALITY
Parts are made in high quality grey resin. Details are clean, sharp and crisp, perfectly visible and nicely sculpted. Bases are nicely designed both as stand-alones and also as a full set. Not every figure will fit every base, because some bases have only minor flat areas, so one may need to modify the figure/base to fit each other.
Some very minor cleaning may be required but there is no heavy flesh, no cracks nor bubbles visible.
The lizard, as tiny and perfectly sculpted it is, suffered during the transport and arrived with visible damage of spike row on a back. No other damages were spotted.
40x40 Mystic Bases are really nice set – either you want to buy all nine or pick just random two of them. Not every base is equally detailed, some are plain and simple, other quite complex and packed with features but all of them are worth buying.
They are nicely designed and well manufactured. Small damage visible on one of the bases is not something irreparable or influencing on general perception of the product.
Bases may be easily used as parts of bigger vignettes if one integrate them into the surrounding terrain.
If you lurk around the Basicks site for a while you are going to find many of details you see on the bases in the Bettlefield Resin Terrain section as separate products – windows, chests, etc… It makes perfect opportunity to create bigger vignette using the bases as part of “groundwork” and adding other stuff from the same theme.
