Among the latest releases from Carter & Crowley is this set 1/35 scale German infantry figure "hitching a lift" on a tank.
The set consists of 5 resin figures, each comprising 9 or 10 parts. A small sheet of very thin brass is also included to make straps and slings from.
The figures are sculpted in relaxed poses - one is standing, the rest are sitting or sqatting. The casting throughout is excellent and the figures are beautifully sculpted with very fine detail on their uniforms and equipment. Each figure has an individual "character", with a good range of facial expresssions - smiling and chatting.
There is very little preparation needed on the parts. The heads are are cast from the top, so there is a hefty pour-stub to reshape but, otherwise, clean-up should be very simple.
Each figure is bagged separately, which ensures that the parts do not become muddled. Unfortunately, it also means that the more delicate items knock against the heavy torsos. In the review sample, a gun-barrel and entrenching-tool handle had been broken in transit. It only takes a moment's work to rectify, but if the torsos were bagged separately, the problem could be avoided.
While the figures themselves are superb, the lack of either assembly or painting instructions is a little disappointing. The boxtop photo is a help but, considering the number of small items of equipment included, a general diagram showing their placement and colours would be very useful - particularly for modellers tackling their first resin kit.
This set of figures offers huge potential for dioramas, from the attacks on Poland and France, through to the drive into Russia. While the figures are intended to accompany a tank, they could just as easily go in a half-track or even sit 'round a camp-fire. This set of figures isn't cheap, but the quality is reflected in the price. Anyone with the appropriate references should find this set very useful and skilled painters should have a field day with the detail provided.
Thank you to MMD-Squadron for kindly supplying the review sample.
