In-Box Review
Finnish Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

The decals are available in both 1/72 and 1/48 scales;

Set #72045 - price: 5.55 EUR
Set #48078 - price: 7.41 EUR

Each set features three schemes for a pair of aircraft. If that sounds like a mistake, it's not - one of the machines can be modelled in its delivery finish of full Luftwaffe markings with Stammkennzeichen as well as in it's final Finnish markings. The aircraft covered are:

1. Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2, W.Nr 14754, "White 3", MT-213 of 2/HLeLv 24, flown by Ltn. E. Riihikallio, May 1944. This aircraft is camouflaged in the classic Finnish scheme of olive green/black uppersides and pale blue undersides. The Hakaristi (Finnish Swastikas) are on pale blue-grey disks.
2. Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2, W.Nr 13528, DL IC as it arrived at Malmi on 16th May 1943.
3. Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2, W.Nr 13528, now repainted as "Yellow 2" MT-222 of 1/HLeLv 34, flown by W/O I. Juutilainen in July 1943. The German insignia and Stammkennzeichen have been overpainted with RLM paints supplied along with the '109s. There is a further twist to this aircraft, as it briefly carried an Ace of Diamonds motif under the cockpit which was quickly painted over under orders from the flight commander.

The decals are well up to the high standard we've come to expect from Techmod; thin, but with excellent colour depth and minimal carrier film. The aspect that always particularly impresses me with with Techmod decals is the registration of the different coloured inks - it's simply fantastic and puts the efforts of many other decal producers to shame. The featured colour schemes are all treated to full-colour 4-view illustrations with original colour names and FS equivalents, and each set also includes a comprehensive set of stencils, along with a very clear placement guide.

Techmod's motto these days is "more than just decals" and they do their best to include everything the modeller needs to complete the schemes featured. In this case, it's two sheets of vinyl painting masks - one for the canopy and the other for the yellow tactical markings.

Conclusion
This is another great set from Techmod, combining superb quality with a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
