This summer the plan is to "greatly reduce" my "merchandise" which means moving my models from the boxes to the shelf. I was looking around and thinking about what to build when it caught my eye. The model was the F6F-3 Hellcat, the maker, Hasegawa. In 1/48 scale the Hasegawa Hellcat is a very robust aircraft, and this one is no exception. I will explain the three points of the kit and then conclude with my opinions on the overall quality of the kit.
The instructions are typical Hasegawa, with exceptional detail and pictures. They are easy to follow and have no flaws. Its a hassle to follow hard directions with a time crunch like most people have but Hasegawa has cut that out of the model building process completely.
The kit includes nine sprues, with crisp detail and recessed panel lines. It also includes four polycaps to secure the propeller to the crankcase. Builders who are very inexperienced or are just starting out will find the parts easily accessible and available. For the scratchbuilders and super-detailers out there the kit offers endless opportunities to add more detail.
There are two decal options for this kit. One is for a Hellcat off the U.S.S. Essex, and the other off the U.S.S. Lexington. The Essex version is 17 and the Lexington version is 13. Of course you can cut the decals to make your own version or use an aftermarket set if available.The Decals are very good in terms of quality. They react well to setting solution, and snuggle right down into the panel lines. The stenciling is sharp and easy to read. A sure pleasure is the pre-1944 insignia with the red border.
The verdict is unanimous- the Hasegawa F6F-3 Hellcat is a very beautiful kit. Surely you will find the time and place to enjoy this kit. It starts out easy and builds into a very accurate replica of Grumman's feared cats. So, if you are just starting out or are looking for something to really lay into with detail, the F6F-3 Hellcat would be a sure bet for satisfaction.
