Adie Roberts takes a look at a new model from ICM based on a character from the cult TV series Games of Thrones, Great Other in 1/16th scale, whose name may never be spoken The Lord of Darkness to see just how good this one looks.
After the sacrifice of Axell Florent to the fires of R'hllor, the Red Priestess Melisandre instructs Shireen Baratheon, the daughter of Stannis and Selyse Baratheon, on their religion as Selyse believes the child is too stubborn and fears for her soul. Melisandre assures Shireen that her uncle Axell is in a better place now but the child remains unconvinced so the Red Woman tells her the Faith of the Seven and their Seven-Pointed Star is but a fable —there are only two gods, eternally at war: a god of light and love and joy, R'hllor, and a god of darkness, evil, and fear, the Great Other. Shireen asks whether there are seven heavens and seven hells and Melisandre claims there is only one hell: the one they are living in right then and there, the life before death.
According to Thoros of Myr, the Great Other is also known as the Lord of Darkness, the Soul of Ice, and the God of Night and Terror. His true name is forbidden to mortal tongues.
As is with all ICM packaging (and I know I keep on saying this, but, so many other model kit makers could learn a lot from the way ICM make their packaging) so a solid one-piece cardboard box with flip-up lid, keeping all the plastic nice and safe inside, with a further cardboard (thin) lid with the fantastic artwork on it depicting the Great Other stood there with his ice lance.
1 Large light grey sprue which contains the main figure
1 Clear sprue the Ice Lance
2 Medium black sprues which are the base for the figure
1 A4 instruction sheet with one side showing and numbering the parts on the sprue, the other side giving you the paint colours to use. Two paint manufacturers Revel and Tamiya are listed
1 A4 printed sheet of the artwork (nice touch)
The figure on first impressions looks very good, starting with the feet (weird place to start I know, but a method in my madness) the feet have been cut so that the heel, Achilles tendon are on the main part of the leg. The toes of the feet and the sides all look good and how they should look, with good detail in the bones and ligaments. The legs themselves I thought were very well defined without being over the top, the calf muscles are well detailed with the gastrocnemius following the bone structure. The knees are well defined with knee cap quite prominent as is the hamstrings above and slopping into the knees. One minor indiscretion is the mould seam that runs up both the front and back of the legs it should not be too bad to remove at all.
The upper body looks really good both chest and back and are in two halves chest and back, the back looks very similar to the one from the actual series he has some leather straps which attach to the animal skin looking short sleeves on the arms (that are separate from the main body). The chest is really well presented with that walking dead look of really tight skin stretched over the bones, the leather looking straps that attach to the sleeves are crossed over and running down the front of the chest.
The arms follow in the same way as the legs with quite well-developed muscles the fingers look good and all in proportion to the rest of the model, I like the look of the animal skin on the arms and looking at pictures online of the Great Other in some of the shots he does not seem to have any and in some he does and where he does it looks good. The leather amour skirt I really like what they have recreated here the detail of the links holding it together is quite amazing.
Finally, the head looking around it I like what I am seeing it is all pretty faithful to the images of the Great Other that I have been looking at on the PC, the tightness of the skin the ridges and lines all look like the real images from the film work. I really like the depth of the eye sockets which gives it a much deeper almost cutting stare. His hair and part of his scalp look good and realistic again to the look of the film shots of the back of his head.
The Ice lance is fantastically modelled and I really like the look and the shape with some painting effects I believe it could look very much like the ice lance in the film.
The base is in three parts the top and bottom to the base and base itself
Another product from ICM from the hit TV series Games of Thrones I have not had the chance to see any of the other figures yet! After taking a proper look at the contents of the box and doing the review, I will be looking for them to see if they are as good as this one. The Great Other is very good, with some great detail, I particularly liked the ice spear which looking at some stills from the TV series the spear is very realistic. For anyone who is interested in Games of Throne then this has to be a must, large scale impressive looking it has some very minor seam lines but nothing that you cannot be fixed. Overall a great addition to the ICM stable especially with the enormous popularity of the TV show it should be another winner.
