IntroductionEmbankment Vegetation is a scenery product from NOCH, catalogued as Item 23102. It consists of a box full of seafoam plants, two packs of foliage flocking, and an instructional DVD. NOCH advertises it as appropriate for scales G (1/22.5, 1/24, 1/29, and 1/32), O (1/43-1/48), HO (1/87), TT (1/120), N (1/160), and Z (1/220).
In the BoxEmbankment Vegetation consists of seafoam sprigs and two colors of leaf material, and a DVD.
The seafoam fills 192 cubic inches of packaging with sprigs of many sizes and colors. It rages from pale green to buff, with some ruddy hues. The sprigs are dry but somewhat flexible, so care should be exercised in handling it. Some sprigs have leaves still attached but they are easy to pluck off. Most of the plants have some little round seeds attached. I tried unsuccessfully to knock them off by gently shaking the plants.
A pack of dark green and medium green flocking are provided. I can't decide what the foliage flocking is made of but it is cut into irregular thin "leaves."
CultivatingI picked out some sprigs and decided which would be live foliage, and which would be dead shrubbery. The sprigs were sprayed with adhesive and the leaves were sprinkled on. NOCH recommends using some of their spray adhesive products to stick the flocking to the sprigs. None is included in the kit. I used NOCH Spray Glue (Item 61160).
When I was shaking the flock out of the package, some clumped together. NOCH intends it to be shaken out through their Multi-Purpose Applicator (Item 08099).
You, the modeler, can decide whether your flora should have a light or heavy canopy. I put some small bits of seafoam into the structure of the larger pieces, enhancing their volume.
After flocking the seafoam to my satisfaction, I positioned the foliage. Dead foliage first, then the "live" vegetation. Take a look. What do you think?
ConclusionNOCH's Embankment Vegetation affords the modeler to create realistic vegetation. Whether it has to go onto an embankment remains up to the modeler. This set is enhanced with fine natural plants and thin small cut leaves. The basic structure of this set is real plants with fine armatures, and as such it is hard to make a more realistic tree/bush/shrub/bramble. My only concern is the number of little seeds on some sprigs. I just consider the seeds as fruit or seed pods.
Seafoam makes good looking model vegetation and this kit should be popular with modelers of model railroad scenery, or dioramas makers of any genre. Recommended.
