History

Bristol gave their Beaufort torpedo bomber a new fuselage and in the process created one of the greatest heavy fighter/attack aircraft of the war. The Beaufighter was ideally suited for night interception, carrying the bulky AI radar which was then state of the art, and also for coastal strike duties. In this role, Beaufighters of the Banff Wing roamed the North Sea, making life difficult for Hitler's sailors.

First Impressions

Thie second of Aviaeology's stencil offerings, this small sheet offers every kind of stencil worn by all marks of Beaufighter whether factory or field applied. The instructions are not as extensive as other Aviaeology sheets, but they're still crammed with information. Once again, the limitations of printing so much information on a standard 8 1/2 X 11 page render the font quite small, so magnification is definitely called for.

Options offered on the sheet:
This sheet offers all stencils specified on RAF Beaufighter drawings. As with all Aviaeology sheets, extensive use of photo references was made during preparation. These stencils may be applied to all Beaufighter marks except for the early overall Night (black) night fighters.

the decal sheet

The sheet is small and crisply printed. All markings are clearly readable and in perfect register.

instructions

The instructions as mentioned above are extremely thorough. The two pages offer positioning detail for every stencil, and variations where known.

Aviaeology goes to great lengths to avoid inferring marking details. Wherever possible, multiple photos of the given stencil were consulted. Certain markings, while called for on the drawings, could not be verified photographically, and the instructions make careful note of that. There is a lot going on in these instructions. They absolutely must be studied very carefully in order not to miss important details.
