Admiral Models have announced the release of two new kits of the Vought F6U-1 Pirate. The Vought Pirate is not a type as far as I know that has been produced by injected kit manufacturers. Admiral Models have gone for a walk of the plank and taken the plunge by adding two versions of the Pirate, the early and the late.
Although no Pirates entered service with operational Squadrons, Vought's first jet design was interesting in that it pioneered the use of afterburners and composite construction. The most unusual feature of the aircraft was its use of "Metalite" for its skin. This was made of balsa that was sandwiched between two thin sheets of aluminium. "Fabrilite" was also used for the surfaces of the vertical stabiliser and rudder; this was similar to Metalite, but used fiberglass instead of aluminium.

A pity Legato Models, the parent company of Admiral, has not included any sprue shots of either kits, but there you go.

Nice news for early Navy jet fans.

That depends. If you consider Meikraft to be an injected kit manufacturer, it was done many years ago. I have one sittig on my shelf. I have a strong feeling that Admiral's kit will be much more relaxing to build though.

Well in the "do you consider it a kit" category, I've got one from Pavla with brass for both versions waiting for me to get to it.
