Luftwaffe On Patrol

by: Bryan Dewberry [ TIN_CAN ]

This figure offering from Mastery Miniatures contains three Luftwaffe figures. Each figure is 1/48 scale and molded from white metal. The figure set is comprised of two ground personnel and one pilot.

What's in the package
As stated earlier, the package comes with three figures-two ground personnel and one pilot. The ground personnel are depicted in coveralls while the pilot is decked out in flight gear. One of the ground personnel is holding a parachute.

The card insert shows a picture of the painted figures while the back of the card has a color chart for painting. The color reference is Humbrol enamels.

The Detail
The clothing of the figures is well represented with folds and wrinkles where they should be. The pilot figure has plenty of detail and will make the painters happy. The figure holding the parachute is a nice touch.

Extending from the left foot of each figure is an extension enabling the painter to anchor the figure to make working on it easier. A very nice touch with the modeler in mind.

Recommendation
As with any metal figure, there is some cleanup that will need to be done. There is a seam from the molding process around each figure that will need to be cleaned up. There are various pieces of extra metal that will need to be removed too. The parachute is molded directly to the figure holding it which makes the straps look a little unrealistic. I'm sure this is due to the molding process but a detail oriented modeler might be able to remove some of metal with a motor tool and files to make the straps look a little more realistic.

Overall, I recommend these figures. The figures are nicely detailed and would make a great addition to that aircraft diorama you've been thinking about.

Mastery Miniatures figures are available exclusively in the U.S.A. via Squadron.

SUMMARY
With ever increasing numbers of quarter-scale aircraft available, it's rather surprising that crew figures to accompany them have been somewhat neglected by manufacturers. Here, Bryan Dewberry takes a look at a very useful set of Luftwaffe personnel.

My interest in modeling started while watching my dad work late night's on old Star Trek and WWII plane models. I modeled planes for about 3 or 4 years before joining the Navy in 1990 and then took a 12-year break from the hobby before starting back-up again last fall. Man has it changed since I'v...
