In-Box Review
F/A-18C Lithograph

by: Bryan Dewberry [ TIN_CAN ]

First Impression

Having just reviewed the F-16B lithograph I had high expectations for this print. I was not disappointed. The layout is striking with a pair of crossed American flags poised above a beautiful rendition of the Hornet. Several paragraphs of text describing the history of VFA-146 from inception to recent combat sorties flown off the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom are centered underneath the artwork. The text is then framed on either side by the squadron patch of Strike Fighter Squadron 146 on the left and the air wing patch of Carrier Air Wing 9 on the right. In keeping with their previous lithograph this one is also printed on 100 lb. low-glare, matte finish archival paper. The only difference (and a better one in my opinion) is that this lithograph is printed on "cover" weight stock that makes the print thicker and sturdier. This is a noticeable difference from the first print that is about half the weight.

Graphics

The graphics of this lithograph are mind blowing! The colors of the crossed flags and the insignias are rich, colorful and vibrant. The flags in particular have a very commanding presence. The graphics are again offset by a drop-shadow effect that heightens their appearance.Unlike the first lithograph, the rendition of the Hornet seems to have far more detail to it. This could be related to the difference in subject matter. Every panel line and rivet is represented in painstaking detail-even the labeling on the side of the ejection seat is visible! Something you will find on this artwork is the addition of a slight amount of weathering that is evident on all Naval aircraft that see constant wear and abuse. Particular attention was paid to the wear around frequently opened or removed access panels as well as smudges of dirt or leaks where they should be. The weathering isn't overpowering and was done in just the right amount in my opinion.

The Real Deal

Just to provide you a little reference to the accuracy of this lithograph, I've included a picture of the actual aircraft undergoing maintenance on the flight line. I think Twobobs has pulled off a very accurate representation of the real thing.

The Verdict

There isn't a picture I could take that would do this lithograph justice. The increased weight of the paper combined with the stunning artwork make this a perfect 10 in my book. I can't wait to get it framed and hung in my office so I can drive the Hornet pilots green with envy!An 'artist proof' version of this print is available for $45.

A special thanks goes to Twobobs for providing this review sample.
