Lee Jackson (Dirk-Danger) starts a great new series for beginners. In Part 1 he concentrates on choosing a suitable kit and the basic tools needed.

Rowan and Lee

Very very helpful for those of us who still have not made a jump to the dark side.

There is this Tamiya P47D in the stock pile that has been looking at me for well over a year now (it was a gift), and I would like to try it, but am spooked due to lack of knowledge.

You are onto something with this helpful multiple series.

Thanks.

Cheers Steve

Always great to hear from you. Getting some clear and encouraging help for newcomers is high on my list of priorities. As Lee points out, there are no absolute rights and wrongs and everyone has different skills and outlooks - my eventual aim is to build up a range of articles that will serve as a real knowledge-base. I might even pitch in one day myself with a Rowbags-Build!

All the best

Nice one Lee.
An idiot proof introduction to modelling ( so I'm bound to get it wrong then :-) ).
Looking forward to the next installment.

Very cool! This kind of feature should be here and available to all new members. The right man for the job as well, Lee Jackson (Dirk-Danger.)

Thanks for your support folks!

Like all things in our hobby, I learnt from writing these articles. Mainly I learnt that I need to take more pictures as I build

Perhaps, I can build these kits again in 1:48 using the same techniques but with more pics! Seriously though, I think a full article on using Alclad is in order as this has drawn a lot of questions. A nice big 1:48 P-47 with seperate shading on the Panels etc is probably whats called for. Also, an article giving greater detail about using the foam pieces on the Bf109 as a means of masking for mottling may also be required.

Actually, apart from writing the last couple of parts of this article, I'm currently working on a modelling 'dictionary' with entries such as -

Future – A trade name for an acrylic varnish often used on kitchen floors! For modelling uses, it is frequently applied as a gloss varnish prior to applying decals and after applying decals to protect them - especially if applying washes. It has other uses such as dipping canopies to get a clear ‘thinner’ looking canopy. When mixed with Tamiya ‘Smoke’ can be used to tint modern jet canopies. Known as ‘Klear’ in the UK and made by Johnsons.

I'll wait until I have plenty of things on the list then I'll start a thread asking for other peoples input and when it appears complete we can ask Rowan to publish it.

Cheers,

Lee

Hi Lee

That's a great idea! It could take a while - and who's to say it'll ever be "complete" - but it'll be a huge help in overcoming some of the terminology that must baffle newcomers.

All the best

Great idea with this series of articles.

Hopefully it will help bring people into our hobby - and who knows - maybe us old timers can pick up a trick or two as well I am pretty new to the aircraft scene even though I have been building Panzers for more than a decade and might learn a few things.

He he he... :-) :-) :-)

I hadn't thought of putting that sort of modellers vocabulary in there.......

I think it may be a bit too colourful for some of our readers.

Hi Lee
I'm very glad you picked this up and have done such a great job of it.
Its very well executed and I can't wait for further episodes.

I think it will be a great help in encouraging both those who are thinking about starting modelling and those who have just begun.
Also its a nice refresher for the more experienced.

Hi Folks,

I just started building models and needed some advice on tools and other items. It was a nice surprise to stumble upon this forum and find everything I needed so far. Thanks for a nice article.

Boxes don't throw them out just yet!

I cut mine up to use the tops to scan for kit reviews. I still have some. Mostly I use the bottoms for project trays. I'll span the sides with the box top end panels ( because they are the right width.) Then glue them to the box bottom sides. That allows me to stack the same sized box bottoms (now trays) on top of each other. I use a sharpie to mark the tray ends as to the contents.

Neat little display there. What do you have them mounted on?

That's just a photo collage in my picture viewer software (Picasa)

I scan all my Box Art from completed kits and put it on CD.
