Anyone know what the correct cockpit and wheel bay colours for the F4U-4B Corsair are? I have the 1/48 Academy kit, and I'd like to be sure.

After having had to hunt this one down repeatedly, lol . . . .

Cockpit is flat black from the consoles to the cockpit ledge, and interior green below that. Wheel bays and gear doors on a -4B are most likely going to be dark sea blue. The gear legs themselves could be aluminum lacquered or painted dark sea blue, with bare metal oleo struts, of course.

Hope this helps

Hi ,

In Squadron Detail and Scale book about F-4U4B - Wheel Bays are in Zinc Chromate Interrior Green (like Cocpit ), also in Combat sorties when service change parts of landing gears they leave them in production colour - Zinc Chromate Interior Green , not aluminium .

Best Regards (:-)

Hi all,

I thought only the nightfighters like the F4U-5N had "everything" painted in Dark Sea Blue??
I am currently building Italeri's 1/72 F4U-5N and one can see in photos that the doors and gear legs are Dark Sea Blue, like the rest of the aircraft. But a b&w photo of an F4U-4B shows that the legs and interior of the wheel bays are much lighter. So I guess Tomcat is right??? I need this info, as I have an F4U-4B coming my way....

I try to findout some info about painting here it is : sorry for this link but I have problem w url/bbcode and java.error

http://www.modelarstwo.org.pl/lotnicze/dokumentacja/malowanie/corsairy/kol_wewn.html , please copy this adress - (sorry but language is Polish )
I translate some parts of this info: From atachment 1 to order SR-2d , 13.03.1944 all Corsairs - paint Glossy Sea Blue overall also Wheelbays , most of landing gears in lightgray and silver was painted to Glossy Sea Blue - after late time all wheel bays was painted Interrior Green

-primer : Zinc Chromate primer ,
- ANA611 Interrior Green , for all interior with cocpit

I think it will help.
Best Regards

Thanks for all the info guys. This definitely helps! :-)
I like the site you posted, Tomcat, the pictures help a lot. Unfortunately my Polish is a little rusty....
But with your translation I could understand it anyway. Yodaman's link explains about the same. So for the F4U-4B: cockpit black, Interior green from the consoles down, gear bays and doors Glossy Sea Blue and the struts either aluminum lacquer or light gray.

Thanks everyone - I knew you lot could help!

(Not that I'm going to get to it soon - we had a baby on Wednesday, and since he's a couple of weeks premature, he's in ICU on a ventilator).

Thanks! He's improving, and we hope he'll be home in a couple of weeks.
