Hi guys,
Does anyone know if standard WW2 British 250lb and 500lb iron bombs had a rough "cast" texture on the surface of the bomb? I seem to have it in my head that they did but can anyone put me right on this?

Martin- you have a 500lb bomb in your head?!? Sounds painful

So, except for that 8000lb monster, doesn't look like it in this admittedly small sample...
Of course, it looks like they just filled an old boiler with TNT for that big Betty...
Cheers & HTH!

Martin,

Maybe you're thinking of the "crackle" finish that was sometimes applied to the U.S. post-war/modern Mk. 81-84 series to create drag, thus allowing a low-level aircraft to "outrun" the bombs it just dropped and thereby avoid the explosion.
