Welcome to the Display/Demo Aircraft Campaign! This campaign is all about aircraft in special paint and marking schemes, either as stand alone demo aircraft or part of a display team. The campaign will run from 1 September, 2020 through 1 June, 2021.

If you want to see the rules and sign up, go here. Post campaign related discussion and in-progress photos in this thread. Pics of finished models should be posted in the campaign gallery.

Looking forward to models of those flashy birds painted to impress!

Mark,

I know what you mean! I'm a little over the top on this theme myself. I've been looking in the stash at possibilities, and I could do:

1/48:
Academy F-86 in Golden Hawks or Skyblazers colors
Tamiya F-84 in Thunderbird markings
Airfix Hawk in Red Arrows colours
Hasegawa F-15C either as the 94FS Demo team or MO ANG in St. Louis Cardinals markings (I'm a fan from way back)

Or, if I'm really nuts:

1/32 Academy F/A-18C with a Black Box -A conversion in Blue Angel paint.

We'll have to see what inspiration hits.

Nice, thanks Peter. I'm just trying to think of a good theme for the ribbon, that would fit in something that small.

All right. Battle of Britain reaches it's peak, and Helmut Wicks 109 is nearing closure. Best to look for the next project, hopefully to put here. A J34 Hunter, a J35 Draken, or maybe a SAAB 105 from Team 60.

Hoped to put up some pics but the server was busy. Anyway, the Hunter is grey/green, with only the teams name on, the Draken is all metal, with blue fin and yellow leading edge, and the 105 is mostly blue and yellow overall, but I'm not sure the 1:48 scale model is out yet. Does anybody know anything about that one. Should be from Pilot Replicas.

OK, narrowing down the choices. I tend to be a Navy man (odd, based on where I live) so I've concentrated on the Blue Angels for the most part. But I have the following options to complete a couple of interesting pairs:

Anyone have a preference?

@ Michael, since I'm doing an F-16, I vote for the F-84.

The Navy had a huge base in Idaho during the big war. And I thought they spent the '60s turning Arizona into a navy base, so why not Colorado?

I like it, Tim! But I wonder how it will work out if minimized to the regular size

Nice, Tim! That airplane was one of my options (though people seem to like the F-84). I'm down with it.

Well, the F-84 seems to be the clear favorite, so let's go with it.

First things first. This is one of those kits that Tamiya chose to release with "chrome" plating. I get why they do this, but it's gotta go if you want to build an actual model where you clean up seams, etc. So:

Always interesting to see what color plastic they used. I have a MiG-15 kit I did this to, and one of the sprues was black! Let's see what color the fuselage is:

Off white. Kinda boring, Tamiya. But the yellow is nice! Guess I'll be primering this one for sure.

I have two decal sheets to choose from, the kit sheet and one from Airway Graphics I picked up before the dedicated kit was released. I'll probably try to go for the Airway one first, but it's 21 years old, so we'll see how it's held up. I also have the Cutting Edge cockpit set for the kit, so that's a nice addition I found in my stash! You never know when you'll find something useful.

Oh, and Mark, I actually live in Colorado Springs, home of the Air Force Academy. We actually get a T-Bird show for graduation every year. So you'd think that's where my interest would focus. Never know about these things.

LOL Michael, you never know. My burg, along the Puget Sound, for no obvious reason (Henry M."Scoop" Jackson?) has a Naval Station. There are at least 3 other Naval facilities within 100 miles. If I buy a ticket, I can see the Blues at Seafest.

Nice, Pas1! I have the old Koster 1/48 vacuform kit that I plan to do the old Israeli team colors one day, but I don't feel up to a vac kit right now, even one as nice as a Koster. Looking forward to yours!

That would've been interesting to see. Haven't built a vac kit before, have to give one try some day. I do have another Fouga by AMK in stash, but it will be in Finnish markings.
