Personally, I don't see this as a 'fatal' flaw in the ZM F4 kits - I have 2 and they are fabulous - and that conversion due to the kit's curvatures is going to take a great deal of care and attention to cut and graft onto a £70 /$90 kit. Then blending it all in, re-scribing details back in etc - what could possibly go wrong?

Above all, how many people will (actually) be able to notice any difference once painted and comment that you 'obviously' used the conversion part....unless of course they can see all the putty and blending lines!

I must declare that Jeffrey Kubiak is a friend of mine and that I cut paint masks and other details in vinyl for him.

I wouldn't buy a ZM phantom but it does show a certain lack of attention to get this small detail wrong? It also shows the attention to detail that Jeffrey has? There are many voices on his web site that say that they will be buying this set and no one has to. So don't buy it but do see the merits in it?

Jeffrey is working on releasing a 1/48 scale injection moulded SR-71! He already produces detail sets for the existing kits and they are wonderfully done. He does all of the design and casting himself and this detail set for the Phantom is the sort of thing that young companies have to do to fund the greater projects.

Anyway, buy this or don't buy this but be assured of the quality

My post was not intended or implied to be critical of the quality of the product Mal and I simply said (IMHO) I just don't see what (significant) improvement it will deliver to the hobby average 45+ years old eyes. I say that because when viewed in the hand or on a club stand, it will certainly not be anything like the large scale blow-up photos suggest.

I also found it interesting how prior to this conversion being announced, not one person or reviewer writing on the net or in the numerous hobby magazines (including any of the 'big names') that I came across made a single mention of this kit's apparent flaw which this seemingly corrects. Rather, everyone was lauding it as the best F4 kit ever made in any scale in (all) respects.

All that said and for what it is, the price is certainly very reasonable indeed and so ultimately, one can buy it or not.

Hi Gary,
And in no way was my post intended to suggest that you were being critical of the quality

But as jeffrey is a friend then I just wanted to point out the quality of his stuff He has produced several correction sets for the existing models of the SR-71 and X-15 for which I have produced paint masks for as well as the F-15.

I wouldn't buy the ZM Phantom kit and if I did would I add this detail set? probably not but, as I said, there are many on his web site who are very excited by it And it is part of the route for Jeffrey being able to afford to produce an injection moulded kit of the SR-71, which I will buy because even though I don't do modern stuff that kit is going to be stunning. And that is because of Jeffrey's attention to detail.

I thought that you might be interested in the fact that Jeffrey has just asked me if I can cut another 200 sets of the guide strips for this, as it is selling so well
