Hello,

Can someone help me out and tell which version of the BF 109 E this kit will build into....

I'm hoping for an E3 so I can do it in Condor Legion colours...

Cheers

The model on the box top is an E7, which could as easily be an E4 if you leave the bomb off.
For your purposes, all it needs is the proper round-topped canopy to be an E3. You can get that in several different Falcon canopy sets. Set No. 5, 29 and 42 all have the early 109 canopies which can be made to fit this model.

Here's a Swiss E3

Compare the canopy to the E4

For modelling purposes, the canopy is the major visible difference (They also didn't have the drop tank/bomb fitting under the wing, so leave that off). Note that the E4 canopy could be (and often was) retrofitted to the E3, but that happened after your desired time period.

On top you have an E-7 trop. Curious, the E-3 wasn't introduced until long after the Spanish Civil war was over, I thought.

I think you would want B or C model for that.

Best Wishes,

Gary

There were a very few E models in the last few months of the conflict.

Thanks, Jessie. I thought it was something to do with the canopy that marked out an E3 from an E4, and now I know. I've just ordered one of these from Ebay: Pavla V72003 1/72 Vacform Aircraft Canopy Bf-109E3 & Bf-109K. I hope it does the trick.

Cheers

Hey Gary, apparently 44 E-1 and E-3s were supplied to the Condor Legion from Autumn 1938 until early summer 1939. They saw action at the beginning of 1939 when the nationalists took Catalonia.

That should do. Of course now you need to find a -K to put under the other canopy
