Ki-44 Exterior detail set for Hasegawa kit

Introduction
After purchasing a detail set from Eduard, one will never be content with kit-supplied detail again. I am fairly experienced in working with photo-etched detail sets. Although I initially planned a quick, in-box review, after marveling at the detail this technology affords, I just had to build the Hasegawa kit.

Contents
Included in this set is a single fret of metal photo-etched parts to enhance the following in the new Hasegawa kit:
- landing gear leg detail.
- oil cooler grille.
- butterfly flap details.
- landing gear door interior detail.
- engine ignition leads and oil lines.
- machine gun barrel cooling jackets (x2).
- tail wheel doors.
- landing light inset.
- air duct grilles, and other details for the fuselage.
- canopy fairing detail.
- cowling air intake grille.

No special tools are needed. I don’t own a fancy bending machine (still!), so I make do with my blunt duck-bill tweezers and an old paintbrush with a mushroomed, wooden handle. CA adhesive and keen dexterity will also be needed! The only very tricky parts are the perforated cooling jackets for the two machine guns . I just can not seem to roll them tightly enough to fit around the plastic barrels.

Conclusion
This set, along with the pre-colored interior set, transforms an already good kit into a show-winner. Less-expensive than the full detail set, it provides all the most important parts for a stunning model.
SUMMARY
Highs: Affordable. Great detail. Fairly easy build for someone with adequate skill (not me)!
Lows: Some parts (the engine detail bits) are fiddly and the MG barrels are difficult to bend to shape.
Verdict: Good value for money.

About Ted Hayward (ted_hayward)
FROM: TAIPEI, TAIWAN / 台灣

From B.C., Canada. Living in Taiwan for past several years. I've been building kits for as long as memory serves -armor, aircraft, cars. Big fan of 1/16th scale armor kits. Currently serving as poster boy for working with CA adhesives in a well-ventilated area. My first kit was the positively awful ...
