Not quite there yet. I'm retiring to Hendersonville in about 2 years; bought some land out in Etowah. I'm all ready to beam out of the frozen Northeast to the Hooterville area. Lived down South when I was on Active Duty, so I can speak "Southern" passably.

Greensboro, Here. Tho not sure for how much longer. Wife is leaving me for an older fatter uglier sleazebag so I'm looking at signing on with a Bomb-dog outfit that provides security in Combat zones. We'll see.

Chris,
Have you ever considered an AMPS for Central NC? Perhaps it would be too big, but I'd like to do the same thing here in Charlotte. E-mail me if you want. we'll talk..

Asheville is nice. We were talking about the Black mountain area, but nothing ever came of it, and then children came along, and here we are, still up by UNCC. Charlotte's not too bad, but the lack of decent Hobby shops is disconcerting. HobbyTown USA in Pineville is the best (IMNSHO).

Did you happen to make the WWII reenactment camp at the hezekiah Alexander homesite last weekend? They had a really nice, running
sdkfz251 OT-810 on display. Guy was really nice about it too, let me crawl into it, take detail pics of the interior, etc.

Hi novembersong- Asheville is nice indeed but getting way too expensive to live there. We live over off of Prosperity Church Rd. I have to agree- there are no good hobby shops here. I've heard of one down the 77, just over the border somewhere but I have yet to go there. I haven't tried the Hobbytown in Pineville. I visited the one on WT Harris but the service and selection were lacking- I'll never go back.
It's funny you mention the OT-810- one of my professors is a big ww2 buff and had one 10 years ago. He sold it to a guy in Fayetville that re-built it. I would have loved to have gone to the reenactment- unfortunately until I graduate my free time non-existent. Are you a member of the local IPMS chapter?

"We live over off of Prosperity Church Rd"

Oh man, were really close! I'm off of Back Creek Church!

" I have to agree- there are no good hobby shops here. I've heard of one down the 77, just over the border somewhere but I have yet to go there. "

Yeah, it's down in South Carolina, around Rock Hill. Unless you are into car models, dont waste the gas.VERY little in the way of armor or military in general there.

" I haven't tried the Hobbytown in Pineville."

Well, better call them before going down there, I heard from the guys at the Harris road site today that Pineville shut down 3 weeks ago.

" I visited the one on WT Harris but the service and selection were lacking- I'll never go back. "

Let me guess; older guy, with glasses? Yeah, he can be a real tough nut (and Im feeling extraordinarily generous tonight), especially if you go in there with kids. I can almost hear his colon clenching up when he sees me and my boys walk in.

There are two guys who work there that are cool though. the guy with the dreadLocks is pretty nice. he doesnt know alot about models, but he's at least friendly. And there is a shorter guy there with a goatee who does alot of warhammer stuff, but will be really helpful when it comes to paints and stuff.

"Are you a member of the local IPMS chapter?"

Not yet, I was going to go to their last meeting, but T-ball games are Fridays at 6:00 PM, and my boys come before models. But, after this friday, im in the clear until the fall, so I think I'll hit the next meeting maybe.

I was actually entertaining the idea of trying to start a local AMPS chapter. I like models in general, but I am really stuck on armor, and really addicted to the WWII era, so I thought maybe I'd see if there was any local interest in it.

We ought to meet for coffee some time! My best friend (the guy whose responsible for getting me back into modeling in the first place) and I try to hook up 3 or 4 times a month and build stuff in his garage. He's way better than me, but then, he's been at it for 30 years now..

That is close! Makes getting together for coffee much easier!

"Yeah, it's down in South Carolina, around Rock Hill. Unless you are into car models, dont waste the gas.VERY little in the way of armor or military in general there."
Funny, I heard that today from a fella at school. Oh well, around here there seems to be a huge following of NASCAR.

"Well, better call them before going down there, I heard from the guys at the Harris road site today that Pineville shut down 3 weeks ago."
Dang, short of the net there really are no decent LHS around here.

"Let me guess; older guy, with glasses? Yeah, he can be a real tough nut (and Im feeling extraordinarily generous tonight), especially if you go in there with kids. I can almost hear his colon clenching up when he sees me and my boys walk in."
Yeah, that's the fella. He was there both times I visited and didn't want to answer any questions at all. I felt like the kit area was an afterthought.

"There are two guys who work there that are cool though. the guy with the dreadLocks is pretty nice. he doesnt know alot about models, but he's at least friendly. And there is a shorter guy there with a goatee who does alot of warhammer stuff, but will be really helpful when it comes to paints and stuff."
I'll keep that in mind- it's such a pain to order paints over the net unless I'm trying to get Gunze. Luckily they are 5 minutes away so it's no big deal.

"Not yet, I was going to go to their last meeting, but T-ball games are Fridays at 6:00 PM, and my boys come before models. But, after this friday, im in the clear until the fall, so I think I'll hit the next meeting maybe."
I went to a great show in Gastonia a couple of weeks back and had a ball. I wanted to join the crew there. They were a bunch of great folks and enthusiasts. Unfortunately with gas prices where they are it's just not feasible. I've got a part time job to help with expenses (ie: the collection) and scheduling presented problems. Too bad though- met an old photographer who built a couple of amazing King Tigers. He's 73 and producing some fantastic builds...

"I was actually entertaining the idea of trying to start a local AMPS chapter. I like models in general, but I am really stuck on armor, and really addicted to the WWII era, so I thought maybe I'd see if there was any local interest in it."
I'd be interested for sure. I'm an aircraft convert. I still have a few in the stash but I'm selling most of them off to start gathering some armor. I'm interested in WW2 and modern. More or less it's what strikes my fancy.

"We ought to meet for coffee some time! My best friend (the guy whose responsible for getting me back into modeling in the first place) and I try to hook up 3 or 4 times a month and build stuff in his garage. He's way better than me, but then, he's been at it for 30 years now.."
I'd certainly like that. It's nice to get to talk about models with someone who shares interest. My wife tries to look interested but her eyes end up glassing over... I'd like to meet your friend as well and see some of his builds!

Ignore that bit about the Pineville store closing; I was given bad information. I called them this morning to see for myself, and was told by the fellow who answered the phone that they were indeed opened for business, and they had no plans of shutting down soon.

Anyone here from North cack-a-lackee???

Yep, I been in No. Caro for 5 years now, Left the cold northeast, got sick of the weather after 56 years, just me & the misssus. A little town called Newport. It's nice to hear, see them Harriers from cherry point all the time, they also throw in a few F-18's & some Ch-53's & occasionally a Hawkeye to say the least, even thought I don't model modern a/c. I like the 75 degree temps we been having, but we do need rain. Problem is that i have less roomhere & the fingers don't work like they used to.
Cheers.

Back in G'boro for two years after leaving over thirty years ago to escape the Jesse Helms mentality. Have tried IPMS twice over the years, but they do too much whinging and ladying for my taste. Except for Eddy Waas, the IPMS mag was a waste of trees the last time I saw it. AMPS is more my speed and have enjoyed their mag and more accepting outlook.
Start lots, finish little, all WW II armor and aircraft (and one ST-TOS Klingon battlecruiser). Mostly interested in camo schemes and markings. Heavy on German and Soviet armor and German and Japanese a/c.
Yrs,

I've been around a long time but haven't checked into this forum until now.

Not living in Nawth Car-lina now, been a Soreback for the past 35 years. I'm still only a hop, skip, and jump away from by birthrite in Caswell County, NC, so I guess I'm still part Tarheel.

I lived in Asheville for five years after service Jon. Loved the place and would have stayed, but work ran out.

I have lurked on here a while, but this is my first post. I'm in Shelby, about 40 miles west of Charlotte. I'm getting back to the hobby that I have dabbled in for 45 years. As someone else mentioned, my fingers don't work as well as they once did. I call myself "digitally challenged", which is a fancy name for "clumsy". But alcohol seems to help.
