I have a sickness when it comes to mustangs and this one is calling ... well screaming at me to be built .

I do have a few goodies to add , but I'm not going crazy with the aftermarket items

Best of luck on the checkerboards. On my Testors P-51 they were a nightmare.

Ha ha - When I saw this on the home page I knew it would be you Terri -
I suppose one could say this Mustang was made by " WAY North American
Aircraft "

I'll be watching for sure - you'll be done with this one in the time it takes me to walk to the bench and decide what to do next !

Nice one! I'll be following your build.

I bought the kit when it first came out and did a quick test-fit (which was very encouraging), but I've held off tackling it for real in order to use it for comparisons with various Eduard upgrade sets that came in for review. I was a bit lazy over Christmas, but I'm just starting to get them posted.

Glad to have to follow along on the build , hope not to disappoint . Being following your reviews as you post them .
I do have the cocpit , wheels and prop for another build including the exterior PE set . I didn't op for the exhaust though . I still have a few Ultracast sets in the stash to use up .


I start cutting parts free and been messing around with test fitting and I must say the fit so far is most excellent so hopely this will apply once glue takes it place in the build .


Now it's time to get parts cleaned up and on with the painting ...

All of the parts that get trapped between the fuselage halves are free up and cleaned up ready for mods for the PE parts and paint . There are 25 parts for this minus the chin breathers . The seat was built up and this will be replaced with Ultracasts seat .

Detail of the parts are pretty good , soft in some areas but nothing that a bit of wire and plastic can't address . There are injector pin marks in very noticeable areas which will need to filled . Worst ones are on the cockpit side walls so will be punching a few discs .

Gotta say that the resin seat and belts really puts the kit part to shame.

Terri, I will be along for the ride with this build as well. I hear you on the decals. I build mostly 1/32 scale and have been slowly making the switch to using masks to airbrush the insignia on my builds. I built a JG1 Fw190 A7 a couple of years ago and opted to spray the checkboard pattern on the nose. I imagine that given the respective shapes of the noses of P51 vs Fw190, the airbrushing the checkboards on the P51 would be a bit more involved, but doable for someone with your skills.

First round of adding the PE parts on the items needing paint . Detail has also been removed for the coloured PE parts once everything gets a coat of paint .

Work continues with airbrushing over the weekend and base colours are on the cockpit and the wheel wells are painted as well ( no pic though ). I did add the cool air vents behind the seat using oxygen hose and bits of plastic . ( Mengs kit has this detail ) Still have to finish off the instrument panel , a few small levers to add .

Great to see you taking up the airfix Mustang, especially on the heels of your last 1/48 Tamiya and the Meng kit a few months before that!

Apart from the strange cross hatched back pad the kit seat and molded on belts look half decent and a nice option for the oob types.

Your cockpit work is looking good! Can't wait to see it buttoned up

The pit is now ready to be trapped inside the fuselage . The Eduard set does aid in a few of the items such as instrument panel , switch panels/faces . I did lose a few same levers but you do get extras in the PE set .

Rowan , as tasty as it looks , you still can't eat it . Just to hard and crunchy and gets caught in one's teeth . I mean , who wants a weird look from the dentist .

Thanks guys for the kind comments . I have the wings together and the fuselage and will let this set for a few days . Their are some fit issues along with miss mould detail . Will post pics of this soon .

I don't like the detail on the wings . Their choice on placing the rivets soesn't cut it for me . If it was just panel lines it wouldn't bother me . So I will be filling the wings on this build . This is going to take time but that's ok ...Will turn my attention towards the Ki-61

I picked this kit up yesterday so I'll be following along,I think the only parts I may replace due to having some unknown resin parts are the seat and instrument panel.
