But when you're sitting in the ruins of your earthquake-destroyed city, there's nothing more welcome than the sight of one of these beauties stuffed to the gills with emergency supplies.

Their crews take them into the middle of devastation and horror, bringing what is most needed to where it is most needed. And then they fly away to do it all over again tomorrow.

I propose a campaign to showcase the unregarded freighter, military or civilian. Any scale, any time period, any markings. What-ifs will also be allowed. Here's your chance to stretch your skills and build something big.

The Caribou is one of my favorite aircraft.
I have built a couple of the A-model 1/144 kit.


There is or was an IM one in 1/72 scale by Hobbycraft, that might be hard to find. There is one on that auction site right now, in Canada actually.
Scale mates says it has bee reissued in recent years by someone called "kitech".

Lastly, Ozmods made a 1/48 mixed media kit that is now rare.

The old Curtiss Commando is a great subject for a model. They worked for the US military throughout WW2, Korea and Vietnam and with dozens of other countries and civilian operators around the world.
The USAF museum has this interesting picture from Korea in 1950

I suspect the dark blue one is an ex-Navy R5C requisitioned by the Air Force for the Combat Cargo Command.

Platz makes a beautiful 1/144 scale kit of various versions
of the C-46.

This kit has a sprue with optional radome nose and other spooky parts.


In 1/72 the older Williams Bros. kit is widely available.

Ozmods has kits which will allow you to duplicate this little scene.

The USAF was certainly the biggest user of Boeing's model 377 as various versions of the C-97, accumulating almost 900. The B377 was developed from the B-29, sharing the wing and tail.


At least 20 of them can be seen here at Lajes, Azores around 1950.
I have built a KC-97E from a Minicraft 1/144 kit.

I have four or five more kits. I plan to built a couple of white top MATS C-97As like these seen on Kwajalein in the early 50s.


The beauty of 1/144 scale is the ability to quickly build fleets of larger aircraft and display them together in a normal room.

Also,the 1/72 Academy C-97A kit is widely available for small money.

the rules are simple - aircraft with spacious cabin designed to carry people and luggage where it needs to go. Could include aerial refueling tankers and fire fighters.

Howdy Y'all
I wish I could commit to another campaign, but
1. I'm terrible about finishing aircraft, and
2. I think for next year's campaigns I will try to finish models I've already started. The hangar queens and unfished builds are getting ridiculous.
It's too bad, I really would like to build my Italeri 1/72 C-130 in British markings or my Williams Brothers 1/72 C-46 in Egyptian markings. Good luck with the campaign, I'll be watching with interest.
