Has it been long enough since there was a campaign for vac and resin kits? Is anyone interested?

I woudl join in with a B-52 in 1/48 scale. So yes, 3 years could be appropriate, when seeing theh campaing thread it could give other people the taste to join later

We would need to see what the staff says, so I would submit what ever you guys are wanting in the length if we can get this off the ground.

If I can figure out this photo-bucket stuff, I'd consider joining this campaign if we could kick it off for at least a year in length, 18 months would be better for Vacs. I have a 1/72 Contrail P2Y Ranger and a 1/48 Wings Models E11Y Glen sitting on the stash shelf that keep nagging me-- I've just been looking for the excuse to get them both going. To whet some interest, here's a Contrail HP42 I finished for a customer back in 2008-- it took me the better part of a year just to get it finished including research time:

Every year about this time, as the weather gets warmer here in the NW, I pull out the Contrail P2Y Ranger, Ginter's Book on the P2Y, pull up my lawn chair lounger, and spend some time sitting on my back deck with a cool drink contemplating what needs to be done to complete this Yellow Winged monster. It's been a tradition of mine for at least 7 years now. Usually I just shove the plastic back in the box, and move on to the myriad of other stuff I have to do-- I guess it's about time I stated cutting plastic and broke out of my laziness.

Russ, I love the HP42 and your build is fantastic. So if we can at least get anywhere from 18 -36 months is what I am hearing so far.

I would like to see the Ranger built personally, it was the a/c before the PBY correct?

Yes, the Consolodated P2Y Ranger was the PBY's predecessor. It was flown as the "Commodore" in civil use by Pan Am, NYRBA (New York, Rio & Beunas Aires Air Lines) and of course the US Navy and Coast Guard for several years. I added an edit to my post above about my contemplation of this kit, which I do yearly as a tradition now. The Contrail kit fuselage is about an inch too short, not to mentions all the other Vac issues, so I usually stuff it back into the box and move on, but if I had a reason to be "forced" to get busy, I might actually do something with it

I also have a friend who has given me a lot of background research info and encouragement who would love to see this project underway, so I guess I'm in if given enough time. Vacs are challenging, but they are also very rewarding-- if one actually gets them started!

I am leaning towards the BEECHCRAFT C-45 since it looks nice and clean, but the I16 always looked like an easy build.

I'd love to see DrabSlab's B-52 in 1/48 scale-- that must have nearly a five foot wingspan when completed-- that's a lot of plastic! I'd also love to see the C45 done- I've actually flown in one of those. Hopefully some others will sign up. I don't know how many Vac-Form modelers are left anymore, just about everything is being done in injection or resin anymore-- I don't think many of us Vac builders are around anymore. I see a few kits sitting on my LHS shelves, but most folks turn up thier nose to them. I can understand that with the advances in molding nowadays, but in some cases, (like the P2Y) they are the only game in town. I'm guilty though of turning up my nose too-- I finally traded my Contrail PBM3 in for the new MiniCraft PBM 5, since their latest "Black Cat" release has all the components for a PBM3 in the box, except engine nacelles. So I think Vacs are a dying breed to some degree. Let's hope this campaign gets off the ground.

I also would love to see Drabslabs B-52, but he will need to buy a larger garage to display it. I personally give my models away since I have no room to keep any, but I love to build. It keeps me out of trouble.

As to today's young modelers most are not to keen to sit and figure out how to construct just to shake and bake. Kinda telling our age. And as for the LHS, there is only one in my area (several miles away and the bus does not go to that area) so I do most of my shopping online.

I resemble that remark If we get the 10 for the campaign we can submit it to the staff. Rules would be very simple and open to already started builds. I have a couple of those also.

Ignoring for the moment the fact that I havent lifted a finger on my other campaigns yet this year,
I would absolutely join another VAC campaign.
I have lots of kits waiting to be built, not least of which the Martin Mars that I proposed to build for the flying boat campaign which I havent even opened the package yet...

BTW, Jonathan if you wish the Welsh Dc4 is yours. I don't do 1/144 the vendor sent this by mistake so it was given as a consolation. I could not see the details even with my glasses and magnifying hood.

Gregory, thanks for the interest into the crazy sheet card plastic airplane models group . That makes (7) now, guess time to put down a couple of lines for rules. What would y'all like to see as rules. I'm not for much in the way of rules for vacs other than started kits of 50% are allowed along with a start photo and some in progress shots and the (2) for the gallery.

I'd like to start post-summer-- perhaps September? As for rules, there really aren't too many that would apply to Vac kits are there? I think a start of 50% might be a little excessive though-- that could be anything including completely assembled but awaiting paint and details. How about cut from the sheet (I have selfish reasons, for this, as that's where my P2Y is right now--still with black marking pen outlines) but frankly I don't care, I'll go with whatever rules the group wants.

Really beautiful collection of Vacs-- I think I detect a theme there. I've had the privilege (or misfortune, another way to look at it) of riding in the back of that particular Short Sherpa C-23 at Kwajalein. An interesting experience to say the least. In December 1989, I was on my way to Guadalcanal in a Coast Guard C-130 and we stopped on Kwajalein for crew rest. I was offered a ride by an acquaintance in the C-23 to one of the outer Islands, so I took it. Back to Kwaj on the same day, then down to Guadalcanal in the C130 the next day. While there, caught a ride in a Twin Otter out to Mbanika Island, then back two days later, then out to Mbanika from Guadalcanal again in a Piper Cherokee a couple of days after that. Back to Guadalcanal in the Cherokee a day later, then back to Kwaj a few days later in the C130. Took another ride in a different C-23 to a different island, and back to Hawaii the next day in the C130. Then A UH60 to Fort Shafter. I don't think I've ever been in so many diverse aircraft in such a short period of time before or since.

While I am not interested in joining the campaign , I have , as near as I remember 3 early Combat Models 1/32 Vac kits buried some where . I think they are FW Ta 152 H , 219 Uhu , and P 39 . If anyone is interested PM me - they are yours for the cost of postage . Free to a good home if you will as I know I'll never get around to building them.

You are right that everything I build has been seen on Kwaj, either by me, (I lived there as a dependent child in the late 60s), or from photos by others. I have a 1:144 scale Kwajalein airfield diorama under construction.


In my day the commuter planes were C-54s.

Nice Kwaj airfield dio! Just one question-- was there a "Macy's" on Kwaj when you were there? When I went through, I couldn't figure out why everyone was referring to the Exchange as "Macy's" until I walked in-- it had everything and more that anyone would want on a small Island Atoll in the middle of the Pacific. When I was crossing the IDL and the Equator all those times, it was with a team that was surveying and recovering WWII Chemical weapons. We caused quite a stir on Kwaj when we arrived-- so much so that they "accidentally discovered" some Japanese WWII weapons they mistook for chemical weapons while we were there. There was a lot of bad stuff still around when I went through there-- but no chemical weapons. It was interesting though-- they put us up right on the beach in a mobile home off its wheels-- it was just like being a California beach bum for me! They even supplied us with a charcoal briquet BBQ grill for cooking on the beach-- it was a great mini-vacation for two nights while getting that "crew rest"!

yes the store was call "Macys", and the grocery store was called "Surfway". It is an Army base, but there were almost no uniform service folks on Kwajalein. It was a "Government Owned, Contractor Operated" facility. I actually built the dio and told my story for an Armorama campaign a few years back. Gallery. I knew of guys out there who hunted and collected unexploded ordinance and such.

Bob, Ill take your entire 144 inventory off your hands, if you really want to get rid of it.


oh, and about a VAC building campaign, a September start date would suit me.
