I havent been able to prove that the JRM Mars aircraft called at Kwajalein, though the likelyhood is high, but I have found a photo of RNZAF Sunderlands there around 1962

and Grumman albatrosses were the regional airliners of the day from the mid 50s until about 197o. both these photos were taken I would say a mile or less from the location of your shot above.

That outrigger makes me want to grab a hammock and take a nap.

Got the little diorama finished this week. Here is the result.






I guess the little figure wonders how unprofessional the Wal has been moored. Maybe I have to scratch some rubber fenders.

I have been experimenting with a water base but I am not happy with what I have done, so this will have to be it for now. I very much enjoyed building this kit.


Only 10 days left in this campaign, or if someone, GoofMuilwijk? can finish soon we can extend the end date for a few weeks if that will bring in another result.

Cool plane Jonathan!

I'm still moving along with the Do-24. Don't know if i'll make it in time though. Today i painted the second camo color, removed the masking and came to 2 conclusions:
1: i switched RLM72 and RLM73. It looked right in the jar and when spraying on, one being lighter than the other. But after removing the masking it looked the other way around. That's not something i'll change quickly because it means respraying the plane.
2: the masking tape i used was too sticky, the primer and Vallejo don't work well together, something else or all of the above. I used a mix of Tamiya tape and a cheap alternative. The results where the same. In short: a lot of the paint came off when removing the masking

I'm considering 2 options: restart of just move along and go with the reverse color scheme.
In all honesty i think it's best to touch up the flaked bits as best i can, accept the reverse camo and move to the decals. That means another airbrush session, some detail painting, decalling, a bit of weathering and have a decent enough looking plane. That should be doable in the remaining time. Of course an additional week would be great

All these things i am chalking up to a learning experience. I have another (well,2) Dornier Do24 complete with the AIMS update sets and Squadron canopies. That one i'll probably paint with Tamiya paints, in a lot lighter shade. Any mistakes here will be used to make that one better. And then i'll move on to the 1:48 version....

Hey goof. Whenever that happens to me I just use 3m postit notes to mask the necessary areas.

That's what i was thinking too. I attempted to repair things as best as i could. I'll shoot some pictures tomorrow

I tried to respray the damage as best as i could. The post-it worked well as temporary masks! I'm not entirely unhappy with how it turned out. I sprayed the wingtips yellow with Ammo by Mig paint. This didn't spray or cover as well as other colors of the same brand did. I don't know why really. Perhaps partly because of greasy fingerprints? I need to stock up on latex gloves again. The last ones were used by my little daughter and now i'm out of them. And that leads to handling models with my bare hands which in turn leads to this sort of thing.

And yeah, i realize again why i love Tamiya paints. Never had a problem with it when using them





I've sprayed a layer of Purity Seal varnish and am adding the decals. This takes a lot of time it turns out. There are an awful lot of them, and all are tiny. I've almost lost one of them when handling the wings. They don't seem to stick as well either. Probably because it's an old kit that has been gathering dust for a while :?

The small yellow stripes on top of the wings have broken. I have thought of spraying them but with the result from last time spraying yellow i'm a bit apprehensive. Or perhaps i'll leave them off

TO DO
To do are the decals. Sealing them. Then removing the mask for the canopies. These aren't really masked, but taped off. I'll hand paint them. The propellers need to be sprayed/painted as well. I'll do that while covering the rest of the wings in clingfilm (i think). After that i will join the wings with the fuselage. That will require some cleaning up, bit of putty and additional spraying to cover up the joints. And finally, some weathering.
So: a lot to do really. And not much time to do it in.


And finally: I'm hoping Jonathan will extend the deadline for a week or 2? That will give me time to finish the Dornier in a less rushed manner. I have a daytime job which looks to be busy with a few deadlines next week. That will restrict the time i have available for modelling....

Certainly yellow is the most difficult color to spray. I usually plan on two or more applications with plenty of time to dry between coats.

Please do take the time and care to finish well. Closing date is now evening of october 15th, that gives you three full weekends.

Is anyone else thinking of finishing a kit in this campaign? I recall some more starts, give it a go!
