Not highly informative but these photos do show both the spar root and the auxiliary fuel tank:



Note both left and right fuel lines plus return air vent line coming off both sides of the auxiliary fuel tank and running forward to the carburetor. Also note that the lines do not come off the actual bottom of the tank. This is a practice carried thru even today. Modern cars do not draw their fuel from the exact bottom of the tank. This is to allow any sediment in the tank to settle to the bottom and reduces the risk for fouling the carburetor. Even when your car is sitting dead by the side of the road it is not truly "out of gas".
