Thanks for the review, Rowan. I really enjoyed reading it. Of the first release I have one kit build in 2014 and another one still unpacked in my stash. So when I get the new release I can compare both kits on my own. I found the fitting and the detailling excellent and I really didn't care about the "wrong" measurements. You are right with the moulded on pitot tube and the non existing clear parts for the position lights. That is really annoying and Eduard could have changed that with the new form.
And as I have expected, the price for the new kit has increased .... In Germany the first edition costed about 29 € .... Let's hope for the weekend edition.

That may be down to regional price variations - Hannants are quoting a little more too. But on Eduard's website it the same 37.45 Euros for both the new kit and the discontinued one.

I made a very tentative start yesterday with my hand still swathed in bandages post-surgery. It felt great (and a relief!) to be modelling again - and although I didn't manage to do very much, I didn't have any disasters, so I was pretty chuffed.

Thank you for the well written and fair review Rowan. I buy most of my models from an online retailor in Germany, they are quoting a price of Euro 26,95 which is a very good buy I think.

I'm building this new kit right now, I've paid 25,50€ which is really cheap for that kit. That's a great kit,

Looks like a great kit. I've sent in my cutout corner from the Royal Class kit to get the "mezking" discount on future purchases that Eduard is offering on their website. It's 15% normally but since I'm a Bunny Fighter Club member it's 27%.

I'll buy the new kit and lots of overtress. That being said, it looks like you may be able to build with the parts in this box a: Bf-109G-5, G-6 early, G-6 late, and a G-14 (early?).

If that's the case then this kit is a good deal if you have spare Bf-109 decals.

I've got the cockpit basically complete:



I want to dull down the etched chain-links a bit and glaze the instruments, and probably do a final touch of weathering to pull the elements together. But it's pretty much there. Some of the fiddly stuff has been pushing the limit of what I can manage with a clumsy bandage on, so it'll be nice to move on to the rest of the kit.

A couple of shots before the closing the fuselage up. I'll add the shoulder harness later - I may drape it over the cockpit sill for a bit of extra "life":







Everything's OOB, but I chose not to use the colour-etched fascias for the floor boxes and circuit box. I think the moulded detail is pretty good, and the etch risks looking a bit too "stuck on". Likewise, the little data-panel on the port sidewall - it's too clunky, so I just painted on a replacement (I would have used an Airscale decal, but forgot to apply it while I had everything gloss-coated. )

A little more progress. I've test-fitted the fuselage against the wings and there should be no need for filler at the wing-roots:



You will some on the underside, though, because the way Eduard have engineered things means a seam that doesn't correspond with any panel lines on the real aircraft:



The access panel on the bottom of the fuselage is a bit vague too, so I'll re-scribe that.

I've left the exhausts out for now. They fit neatly enough through the open nose, which will make painting easier. One little bit of surgery to do (depending on which colour-scheme you opt for) will be to remove the mount for the DF loop:

It's probably a blessing that I've managed to get as far as I have with the kit built OOB - or else the temptation to delay everything to incorporate the phenomenal number of upgrade sets that have just arrived courtesy of Eduard via Andy would be overwhelming!





Apparently, there's more to come still, with a full engine and cowl-guns in the works for next month!

So, I'll try not to let the prospect of throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at a second build distract me! Let's finish the current one first! We'll call it a warm-up.

Good progress Rowan!

Honestly, you should really build this one oob (keep strong!!!). There is enough kit in the box to make a good looking model and you can always build the 2nd one with all bells and whistles that you'll never finish.

I was ill for over a week so my progress was slim .. but I am almost there

I hope you're feeling better yourself! I got my stitches taken out today, so my hand feels a lot more like mine without all the bandages wrapped round it.

Don't worry - I won't let all the add-ons deflect me from the standard build. I'll get this finished before even thinking about starting work on a second Gustav.

and the crate is done.

I already liked the old kit (even though it was not to scale) but the new one has some nice shape corrections that make me happy. I do not want to take over the thread so if someone likes to have a look see here.

I hope you will recover full and speedy from your surgery and that you will finish this model kit .. it is worth it!

A couple of weeks of heavy work got thoroughly in the way and put the Gustav on hold, but I finally got a chance to make a bit of progress today and sprayed the basic colours:
