Disclaimer:
Remember, I DO NOT BUILD GERMAN AIRCRAFT!

The Beginnings...

The kiit

Out of the box this kit is impressive. Some good detail in the parts and the etched lines and details are not canyons or sinkholes.

First thing is though, I am finding I just cannot stand molded in surface detail on the interior surfaces. So that just had to go away.

With that out of the way the voices began to scream at me. So I rough cut some interior bulkheads.

And the rest...well....it still is all together.

I did draw a bit on the fuse sides. Just in thought.

I warn you, if you like Trumpeter kits, this may not be a pleasant build for you to watch. The voices are guiding me and they want me to be brutal.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are greatly encouraged.

First Cuts:

The voices....they scream at me.......the voices.......

It is their fault. I do not know what happened. The kit was fine and then well.....

Good Lord here I go again.

Before....

And .............after.............

Well nothing left to do now but finish the job. On to the tail section. Guess I will have to cut it out and do my thing there as well.

The voices.................they call for more......................

Till the next time I guess........

All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged.

Hi Joe, nice cutting.I will never have the guts to do this.
You will produce another winner, currently it looks like a
109, after the base was raided by bombers

Happy modelling

It is a different direction for sure.

Cutaways are different in that they seem to throw out the basic rules of the hobby. They are also incredibly challenging.

Just remember the joy of this hobby is the journey, not the destination.

It's a hole of exceedingly brave proportions Joe. Entails a lot of work inside the fuselage,

Joe,
Just found your current cut-a-way. Should be a very interesting build for sure. Will be following along just as I did with the P-40, adding my 2 cents here and there.

Well just an update to show you I have not fallen off the Earth and that I am still working on this.

God the mess.

What has taken my time over the last week.

The wing framing.

Slow and steady for sure but the results are interesting.

Many thanks all.

I am seriously blown away, I have done nothing really so far on this build and it has close to 700 views already. I really appreciate all of you taking the time to look in. Hopefully I will have something down the road for you to actually look at.

They are never satisfied. If I do something one way they always pester me to add more, to scratch something, to open something, etc. They just never are happy.

Joel I am tackling this a lot different from the way I did the Hawk. More thought, more .... patience (god did I just say that?), and a lot more planning. I already have to revisit a couple of things on the wing frame as the wheel well will not fit in the way I have it.

Today was a long day.

I started my grand experiment at about nine this morning and crawled away from the bench at about six tonight.

What did I accomplish? Not much.

I spent most of the day building up and then tearing down.

Here is the point where I walked away.

I have a cast wingtip for the wing. I have my third or fourth (I cannot remember which) rendition of the wing ribs. I have replaced one of the spars for the wing and cut another to fit the wheel well. I have begun to mock out the framing to see how it will work.

So in nine hours I have got this.....

That is where I needed to crawl away. I just needed to put it down for the night.

Maybe tomorrow.

I did it again.......

I did not like the way the wing frame was looking. It just was not coming together like I wanted it to.........

so......

I tore it apart and redid it yet again. (fourth time) I also redid the wheel well. (third time)

This time I did something just a bit different from the previous attempts.

Slotted so I can work with it. I can put it together or take it apart to add the detail or whatever. Much happier with this.

Now for the overall show of what I have.

And the leading edge is almost ready to work with.

So there it is to this point. Hopefully I can move forward now. I am much more comfortable with the framing like this. I need to punch out the lighting holes and add the detail but at least I can move forward now. (I think)

Joe,
The slotting method looks like a major plus to your build. Much easier to punch out the lightning holes and add whatever details you want, then glue it all together. The leading edge looks well done. Are you just going to butt joint all ribs to it, or cut slots into it?

Actually so far there are no kit parts. We shall see when we get into the details for the fuse though.

Joel I am not sure how I am going to get this together. I do like this slot method though. I have taken them apart several times to do different things and really like that I can put it back together.

Well just to show I have not forgotten this build.

I am progressing but quite honestly a snail would do laps around me at this point. To bring everyone up to speed....

-Lightening holes are finished.
-Major details are nearly done. (Large rod sections)
-Most small details are near complete including some "wiring" and mechanisms for flap cables.
-Wheel well nearing completion.

Pictures...

I still have a bit to do to the wheel well and just a little more to the details on the wing framing. I need to fashion how the tip will fit in and how the whole wing will attach to the fuselage. Oh and the small detail that nothing is glued yet.

Wow so much work for so little actual progress. BTW that is the fifth rendition of the wheel well.

Joe,
This version really looks good. The Wheel framing looks much better now as it's a smooth, continuous curve. When are you going to cut the spars for the landing gear strut. Seems that it would be easier before you glued the struts and spars together.

I gather that you're going to be having most of the wing exposed. How does the gas tank or tanks actually fit as there doesn't seem to be much room other then just in between the spars.
