Once again...into the fray !! Thanks to Jessie, we're right on time with our "Smurf Scale" kickoff. I've been waiting and searching through the stash to decide which one to commit to this build. After much thought, I have decided to declare my entry will be the Minicraft C-130J. I'm going to run with the US Coast Guard HC-130J version.

I'll get some photos posted of the basic kit over the next several days, and then get into the build.

Really looking forward to see what all the other builders are coming in with. I have no doubt we will have quite a variety. The great thing is this scale is definitely growing, with several manufacturers increasing their subjects for us "Wee-modelers" !

So jump in,folks, and let us in on your build plans !

I'm going to try out an airliner. Not in the box colors though. I'll try to find some AM for that.



I've heard bad stories with reguard to Eastern Express. Hope this works out. The kit looks good in the box.

That being a 737-100, there are not many colour schemes available for it given that there were only 3 delivery customers and only 31 were ever built. That said, here are a few ideas for you.

If you want something with a little more potential, I've got a 732 or a 733 I can offer for trade.

Wow, Jessica. I didn't realize the 737-100 were so few. I always thought Canada North used the 100, and I also thought the Pacific Western restoration in Alberta was a 100. Perhaps I have to brush up with a little more reading.
Anyway, I also have both an EastEx 733(300) & 735(500), plus a Daco 737-300 and Revell 800 in the stash. So I'm not short on 737's.

I know you have a fondness for airliners, so if you want the 100 bad enough, just PM me. Its Christmas.

Wow, I thought that only one customer bought the -100 either Lufthansa or United. I think I have the OLD Aurora kit (~1/72) in the stash with United markings.

The NASA -130 is on display at Seattle's Museum of Flight.

Both Canadian North and Pacific Western use(d) 737-200s. They were by far the most numerous of the original series 737s. As I said, I have an Airfix -200 available if you want to do one.

United was the launch customer for the -200. The Aurora kit is mostly fictional given that it was tooled from a very early design concept rather than the actual aircraft. Aurora never let facts get in the way of sales.

The NASA aircraft is not a -130 (30 is Boeing's customer code for Lufthansa). It's the prototype 737, line number 1.

Yes, I know Aurora was well acquainted with fiction. I think I have a 40+ yo article on buffing it out to be a Lufthansa counter display model.

I assumed the -130 from the photo link you provided.... To know that it's the prototype really enhances MoF's display.

I took a skid through google, looking for AM decals of the 737-100. There are those that say they convert 100's to 200's, so I think there wasn't too much difference between the aircraft. Possibly, nothing visual.
Then again, the Eastern Express kit builds into a nice aircraft model in Lufthansa colors.

I can build the -500, or any one of the multitude of 1/144 kits I seem to have hoarded. I'll be just as happy with that.

Having done that conversion I can assure you that the difference is visual. The -100 is 4 windows shorter than the -200 (2 ahead and 2 aft of the wing. When you put them side by side it's quite obvious because the shorter fuselage makes the -100 sit much differently. Then there's the larger port aft airstair door.

I really don't like to feel like I'm mooching kits off people which is why I prefer to trade where possible. I want you to feel you're getting value for value.

For myself, one huge reason for attending the forum is to learn. I didn't know the differences; now I do. I also didn't know there were only 31 -100's made, or that Pacific Western's was a 737-200. Now I do know. So you have gifted me more than once already.

Hi everyone! Now that we are in the holiday season, I have a bit more time to catch up on things. Top on my list was to start my entry for this Campaign! While I was poking around my 144 stash, I realized that I had quite a few Tomcats in my collection but have never built one in 144. So that was the inspiration for my entry here. I will e doing the Revell F-14A in the classic VF-111 Sundowners scheme. I will likely be doing one of the later high vis schemes on the FCM decal sheet. I might be a tad slow with this build as I have a few other kits on my bench at the same time but at least I started!

Today, most of Christmas was spent shoveling snow and starting in on this campaign. Fishing line split-shot is as good as any nose weight.

Since the photo was taken, I've mounted the canopy. I'll let glues set tonight, and mud her up in the morning.

I have a question for anyone who has built a copy of the Revell 1/144 Tomcat using the revised moldings (not the early initial release). Does this kit require a nose weight? Neither the kit instructions nor any kit review that I have seen mention a nose weight as being necessary. There is not much space to add weight so hopefully it will not be much. I thought I might as well ask this question before I get past the point of no return!

I will definately contribute to this campaign, with one of Amodel's more 'challenging' kits

two seconds later..

uh- you see what i have to contend with -
the picture on the box is pretty, but um, that ain't Florida, and anyway, Amodel's decal sheet always goes straight to the bin.
A plain jane NMF USAF MATS (or maybe MAC) 'troop carrier' is what I have in mind.
Imagine, the 8 year old me playing on my bike in the prop wash and thundering piston power at the end of the runway as one of these babies winds up to take off! biggrin.jpg

I had a similar problem with a 1/144 F-15J build in an earlier small scale campaign in this forum. I got around the challenge by cutting out the solid shelf area in the cockpit and adding an aftermarket resin cockpit for a F-18. I did a few small mods to bring it closer to a F-15 but in general, it is hard to tell apart in this small scale. Having a cockpit added looks way better than the solid shelf. You can take a look at the Retro Wings website and see what cockpit might be close to the F-8C model you are working on.

Hmmmm, F-86 or F-5E might work. OTOH, the parts and postage would cost over twice what I paid for the kit.

Jonathan – Cheers; yes, I can tell by looking at the sprues carefully that the Platz is very detailed; the Dragon is very basic, a tad fiddly fit (started construction).

I have the same conundrum with the cockpits (first time at this scale). The seats look like an oversized Lazy Chair. I will try and paint them something and try to detail a tiny bit with sharp colored pencils.

Any suggestions as to what color to use?
