Don't feel to bad, I went out and bought my 1st Mustang kit in like 30 years, Tamiya's 1/32 P-51D. Like you, Nigel's build played a important part of that decision along with my brothers 4 1/32 builds.

.I've saved up for nearly the last year to purchase my opening stash of 1/32 scale props. Here's the war chest I'm going to be building along with 1/48 and one 1/20 scale race car per year:
Trumpeter: F4F-3, SBD-4, & P-47D razorback

I've got a couple of the 1:32 Trumpeter Razorbacks tempting me from the stash, and a Kinetic Razorback too, but got to clear some bench space first 
Speaking of which, its Miracle Mask time
Star and Bar masks in place.
Tamiya tape, post it notes and clingfilm, and then on with the white bits.

the only other 1/32 kit I've been on the fence about is the P-47D Bubble top. I'm leaning towards the Hasegawa kit over the Trumpeter one if just to try my hand at a Hasegawa kit. I'll pass on the Eduard boxing as I just don't see the Value of spending $150 for basically a $80 kit with some "goodies", and not the ones I really want.

Hasegawa bubbletop everytime over the Trumpeter one. I wouldnt be suprised if Tamiya make use of the P+W2800 they've done for the Corsair and utilise it in another big radial

Right then, next round of the Stars n Bars.
Mask sections replaced over the white areas,and the areas to be painted insignia blue weeded out.
Insignia blue painted on,
And masking removed..
Now its an overnight wait for the paint to cure and then its time for the stars n bars to be revealed.

Eye candy indeed. The further along the build goes the more attractive the scheme looks. The 357th certainly had a fabulous combination of colours and noseart, making for what must have been one of the most decorative flightlines in the ETO.

Took the "gear up" section out today in order to line up the white stripe on the gear doors, so took the opportunity to fit the undercarriage legs for a while.
I've also removed the cowling panels ready to mask off the front area yellow/red checkerboard. (Love those magnets!)

Every time I see the engine compartment of Tamiya's P-51D, I can't wait to eventually start mine, but at the same time the intrepidation level climbs another notch. I keep on thinking that my brother has so far built 4 of them, 3 in full NMF, and 1 in semi NMF, so my baseline goals have to be rather high.

Ok, Rowan, seeing as you put it like that I think I might be in with a chance of finishing it before you haha.
Didn't get as much done as I would have liked over the last few days but today I applied the code letter masks and after leaving them for a few hours and checking them with fresh eyes I sprayed them this evening.
I'll take out the centres of the letters tomorrow.
I've also provisionally masked the demarcation line of the cowling checkerboard.
Once I'm happy with that I'll give it a light dusting of white for an undercoat before spraying it yellow. I'll paint the prop tips and serial numbers at the same time.
After that its the really fun game of cutting square (but not square) pieces of masking tape ready for the red part of the cowling checkers to be applied.

Your Masked marking really are outstanding. I'm actually thinking of going that route with my F4F-3 build even though I've purchased not one but two After Market decal sheets.
I'm really looking forward to the checked nose update.

I actually find them easier than using decals.
For example, I'm currently going cross eyed trying to line up the serial number masks.
They've been on and off about a dozen times.
I'm pretty happy with how they are sitting now, but I'm going to walk away from it for an hour, and then check the alignment later.
If I'm not happy, I'll just lift and resite the mask, before finally masking around it and chucking some paint at it.
Try doing that with a decal?
When I spray the serial I'm also going to do the yellow nose section too 😊

Starboard side serial turned out perfectly. (The rudder being at an angle gives the appearance of it being slightly wonky but its not)
Theres some slight overspray around the 3 and the 5 on the port side which I'll tidy up when I spray the red checkerboards.
Nothing thats going to take more than a dusting of red to clean up though.
Yellow cowling band sprayed and prop tips done as well.

The Serial numbers look great. Not a drop of flash can be seen anywhere
the angle of the letters on the rudder really does throw off one's perspective. But they're still perfectly aligned to each other.
