So, I've decided to make a build log for my P-47D. Most of the pics are already published in the official Pin-Up 2 Campaign Thread, but I think that this log will be more suitable for discussions and questions... as I have many of them.

The beginning. Eduard PE set, Quickboost Engine R-2800 and gun barrels, and of course a Tamiya P-47D Razorback:

IMAG0741

Work on the engine. It's the original kit part. Quickboost's piece is a total crap...

IMAG0778

Sidewalls, rear wall, seat (no seat belts yet). All is Interior green, although it should be DDG...

IMAG0782

IMAG0787

Seat... Cushion or pillow, or whatever used to keep pilot's rear parts away from the all-metal seat (it's an all metal seat in my kit too - part of Eduard PE set), is made of Tamiya two component epoxy putty.

IMAG0786

Sidewalls, painted and weathered. Placards and different levers from Eduard set, some of them repainted with oil paints.

P4192566

The bomb... It won't be on the finished model, but as I really like how it turned out - here it is:

P4192567

Some questions:
- undercarriage legs - natural metal or OD?
- the interior behind back windows of the turtle back (I don't know how to explain better, sorry) - the interior color or one of the exterior's colors - OD or NG???

Thanks for looking,
Dimitar

The seat wouldn't have had a cushion since that's where the pilot's parachute went; he sat on it.

The U/C legs were most likely painted aluminium instead of natural metal to prevent corrosion.
The area under the rear windows was most likely the inrterior dull dark green.

Looking good.

Jessie is correct regarding the seat,as most pilots sat on their parachutes. Some however, wore the back parachutes later in the war.

The legs varied between OD painted ones and bare metal. It's a mish mash and replacement legs were often different. There are photos of aircraft with one OD leg and one silver.

The area under the glass was part of the aircrafts exterior and as such on a OD/NG aircraft it was painted OD.

Looking forward to seeing Sleepy Time Gal come together,

Nige

Well, thanks for your answers, guys!
For the u/c legs I'll go for a chipped OD look, may be...
About the cushion - I got inspired by a P-47M built in Sky Model and a drawing in Aero Detail. If they have one - mine should also has one!!! I'm glad that there is a little chance not to be totally wrong here.

P.S.: I can't wait for my AK Interactive stuff to arrive together with the new LifeColor Easy 3 line of OD paints and get back to the project!

So, here's mine Jug. Still far away from completion but getting closer.
Sad that didn't get any images of the ready cockpit before it got trapped in the fuselage but... Anyway, here're some photos:

Ditmar,
A very nice start to one of my all time favorite Republic aircraft. You certainly picked a well designed kit, so you shouldn't have any major issues.

The interior indeed is Dull Dark Green, which was the replacement for Bronze Green in 1941 after the constant complaints about glare. DDG has a darkish Blue tint to it, which is how I distinguish it from Interior Green. Your cockpit sidewalls really came out quite well. Nice job.

As for the Quickboost engine, I've also found that a lot of the resin engines have issues where they are molded onto the backing plate. Generally the level of crankcase and cylinders detail is like night and day. From your picture, the Tamiya engine once detailed looks spectacular. I've combined stock and AM parts at times with good results. What about the Quickboost engine casting don't you like?

I really like the PE seat. All plastic molded seats are way too thick and require a lot of work to just come close to the look of the Eduard seat.

Your cowl really looks quite good.

Joel

Great looking build Dimitar, it's a real pity that most of that cockpit work will be hidden underneath the birdcage canopy

For some inspiration here's a picture of the real Sleepy Time Gal

Joel, Darren, thank you for stopping by and for your words.
Joel, I'll try to post some comparative pics between QB, Tamiya and the real engine.
Darren, because of that birdcage the next P-47 will be a Bubbletop!!!
Stay tune more images are coming.

Ditmar,
The Alcad11 NMF really looks good. It doesn't look like a museum high gloss finish, but rather an operational one, which is the look I generally go after. What primer and color did you use, and did you polish it before the Alcad was applied?

Hi, Joel,

The primer used is the gray one from the AK-Interactive (before they split with Mig Jimenez). Now the same thing is available both by AK and AMMO, I don't think there is any difference.
I had to polish it with Tamiya Polishing compaund as I did't set the pressure well. If you can adjust it, you don't have to polish it as it gives very smooth finish. However if you put it for long time under tap water the primer tends to lift off. At least that's my experience.
Anyway it is a good primer - it can be cleaned with some water, doesn't clog the airbrush and it has no smell which makes it perfect for use in case you don't have a good ventilation. Also it is a non-toxic product.
I hope this info helps.
Soon I will post more progress pics.

Dimitar,
Thanks for the information. I've been using Tamiya's synthetic lacquer gray primer, and I really like it. But the traditional lacquer smell does give me a headache if I'm to lazy to set up my paint booth. Will have to give the AK primer a try.

Sure, Joel, no problem!
Give it a try, the AK one smells like an ordinary acrylic paint (Vallejo or LifeColor).

Coming up really nicely, despite the pause.

Btw, what was wrong with the Quickboost engine?
I've used quite a lot of their parts and have only come across one set so far that was a disappointment - a one-piece cowling & exhausts set for Eduard's Fw-190. There must have been some mould shrinking, since the cowling was significantly too small to fit without major filling and shaping. I ended up using only the exhausts from the set...

Dimitar,
I just envisioned that the hairspray somehow damages the NMF. I'll feel a whole lot better about the procedure, once it's off the Jug.

Eetu, in brief - the engine proposed by Quickboost is not for this version of P-47. I'm not sure if it is suitable for any P-47. If you take a look at the range of R-2800 proposed by QB you'll see that they are basically the very same engine, differing only by the mounting which matches the mounting of the model. It turned out that the QB engines for the Black Widow are the same as those for P-47, F4U, Hellcat. I will try to take some photos tonight.

Joel, I think that when you see the final result you’ll really feel better.

Oh, that sort of thing. Indeed, it seems the Double Wasps by QB depict the same subtype of the engine. Of course, that's perfectly fine if those aircraft used that same type of the R-2800. I'm no expert on P-47s so I can't really comment on the accuracy of that engine subtype. Looks decent to me, though.

Dimitar,
At the rate that they produce Resin engines for just about every prop kit out there, that doesn't surprise me. Usually it's the extra detail on the crankcase and magnetos that I'm interested in.
I wonder just how accurate Tamiya's engine is, as there is always that possibility that they used a pre-existing mold of that engine to save a few dollars and some time.

Eetu, Joel - exactly, it's the same sub-type of R-2800. The magnetos ant the cranckcase are wrong. I suppose one can replace the and use the resin engine, but actually the Tamiya one is a very beautiful rendering.
Here some pics of the advance on the model. Udersides painted.
