F-86A Sabre Canopy
Designed for the Airfix kit [AX03083]

by: Tim Hatton [ LITESPEED ]

Pavla Models have released a canopy that can be used to depict the F-86A. The canopy is designed for the newly tooled Airfix 1/72 F-86F Sabre [AX03083].

Contents

The one piece vac formed canopy is contained in a resealable transparent plastic bag. This is a beautifully clear and thin replacement for the Airfix two part canopy. There is ample spare plastic between the canopy and canopy, so that you can cut and trim the parts without damaging either part. This canopy can be displayed on the Airfix Sabre open or closed.
The frame of the windscreen has the parallel frames rather than the “V” frame of the latter windscreens. It does not quite capture the blown look of the real thing, but it’s a very good attempt. It is very difficult to produce the blown look using the vac formed method. The canopy has a better blown look.
NOTE: It is worth noting this is only part of the modifications you will need to depict a F-86A accurately. Check out your references.

Conclusions

It’s good to see that Pavla has released this style of canopy for the Sabre and it creates possibilities for the modeler to create a F-86A. Nice one Pavla Models.
SUMMARY
Highs: Very good looking canopy, nice and thin, but not too delicate.
Lows: The windscreen does not have the full blown look of the real thing.
Verdict: Highly recommended if you want to depict the canopy of the F-86A.

Comments

Cool stuff, but let's hope we will get a full conversion set for a F-86A as the Cutting Edge set is long OOP. And there are some very colorful paint schemes on the early F-86s.
