Mercedes-Benz Actros 2008
Mercedes-Benz Actros is a heavy duty truck introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1996. There are 36 different Actros models, normally used for long-distance haulage, heavy duty distribution haulage and construction haulage. Chassis available are 2 x 6 and 2 x 4 tractor or rigid, 4 x 6 haulage model, and a 4 x 8 version. It is available in weights starting at 18 tonnes and is powered by a V6 or V8 cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler. They feature the Telligent® safety system. For the driver, Actros cabs come in four types: S, M, L, and LH "MegaSpace"- Long-haul high-roof cab, providing comfort for long driving, as well as enough space for the driver and/or passenger to freely move around the cab when needed.
The new Mercedes-Benz Actros was introduced by Mercedes Benz during the International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover and entered full-production in July 2008. This third generation truck was equipped with a choice of two BlueTec developed engines - 12L V6 diesel delivering a power range from 320 to 480 hp and 16L V8 diesel producing a power range from 510 to 600 hp - fitted with the further-developed PowerShift transmission. The truck also featured level & roll control systems, a new Telligent brake system & stability control and Telligent maintenance system.
. Actros have 5 different variants: Standard height, Low frame, Low Liner, Tipper, and Concrete mixer. Basic dimensions are:
Overall length -- 8790 mm (28.83 feet)
Wheelbase -- 5100 mm (16.73 feet)
GTW -- 18 - 44 tons.
Actros’ BlueTec® engines are turbo-intercooled, 4-valve, direct injection diesels. These power three types of transmissions: PowerShift, Telligent®, and Hydraulic Gearshift, 16-speed synchromesh range change and splitter. Manual gear change hydraulically operated. Carrying this is a suspension of compensating parabolic leaf springs (Front bogie) and two spring bogie (Rear bogie), double acting shock absorbers, and stabilizers.
All of that information may be unnecessary for this review but it was fun looking it up.
Meiller of Munich was founded in 1850; a family company, Meiller produces innovative tipper bodies and tipping trailers, the worldwide proven MEILLER hydraulic systems, and high-quality lift doors.

Herpa securely packs this almost fully assembled model in a form-fitted tray. The tray is held inside a red Herpa carton with a cellophane display window, and opens via tabs at each end. One end sports a holographic Daimler licensing tag. The tray has slots for optional parts, and slots for your fingers to easily remove the tray from the box.
This arraignment is surprisingly durable. In the past some Herpa boxes arrived partially crushed in transit, and although the model boxes were mashed, the model was not damaged. Very nice!
I found no flaws in the molding or assembly. The sharply molded exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods, panels and the grille. Door handles are flush and are the tabs that hold the cab interior in the cab shell.
The cab and tipper superstructure sets upon a highly detailed four-axle chassis. The windshield and windows are free of distortion and you can see the nice interior. It is worth popping the cab off to see. Soft tires mounted on detailed hubs support the model. The front wheels can be made to steer if you use Herpa’s steering set. Twelve soft plastic or rubber tires have nice tread detail.
The business end is a rakish 36,000 kg, 17 m³ Meiller Classic H436 rear tipper. It can be raised and features a functioning scissor-type stabilizer. The tailgate opens, too. While the telescopic hydraulic ram does not extend, it is provided as a single extended part. One end can be attached to the cylinder and the other to the front of the tipper.
Herpa created a detailed model of the chassis: gearbox, frame, fuel tanks, air tanks, axles, springs and suspension.
Individual clear lenses simulate the headlights. But the brake lights are not even simulated with paint.
Inside of the cab is detail worth popping the cab off for: bucket seats, the steering wheel, console, stick shift, and dashboard detailing.
The windshield wipers are part of the combing around the windshield. In the front of the cab doors are slots to mount the optional side view mirrors and corner mirrors. Although the mirrors are delicate, it is a simple process.
Herpa engineered the soft plastic tires to slip over the rims. They display good tread detail.
Livery and Finish
The model components are molded in color: rot
/ red and silver. The Mercedes-Benz emblem is chromed, not a decal. Herpa does not use decals. The surface of the cab is glass-smooth.
This big Mercedes-Benz dump truck will make an impressive presence on your layout or diorama. It has very good plastic detail and a great finish. It has a detailed underbody, lenses for headlights, a detailed interior which is visible through the clear windows, and the working tipper. However, there are no lenses for the brake lights. Recommended.
