172
Modern Soviet/Russian Pilot

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

Alongside their excellent quarterscale accessories reviewed recently, Fairy Hobby have also released their first 1:72 resin figure in the shape of a modern Soviet/Russian fighter pilot.

The figure is stood in a casual pose, hands on hips, and is dressed in a bone-dome, leather jacket and camouflaged flight trousers. The level of detail is very impressive, with finely sculpted items of equipment such as the oxygen mask and harnesses.

Cast in grey resin, the review sample is marred slightly by a small bubble on the helmet. It will only take a dab of filler to correct and, based on the perfect casting evident on the company's 1:48 Chinese pilot, I'll assume it's just an unfortunate "one-off" and not reflect it in my rating for the figure. If nothing else, it proves that not only the pick of the castings are sent out for review. I've seen far worse, but it's still something Fairy Hobby need to watch out for. Other than that, the details are all pin-sharp, and there are just a couple of whisps of "flash" to clean off before painting.

The figure comes complete with full colour multi-lingual instructions which identify each item of clothing and equipment and give painting details. Judging by the photos of a finished figure, it will look superb if painted carefully.

conclusion
Fairy Hobby look set to build up a very useful range of figures and accessories for modern Russian and Chinese aircraft kits. Fresh additions to the range are promised soon and if they match the quality of their initial releases, they deserve every success.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
