Bf 109 E-1 Decals
  • Bf109E-1_Combo

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

EagleCals #120-122 each include markings for four aircraft and, as we've come to expect from this manufacturer, the quality is superb. The thin glossy items are printed precisely in register, with accurate colours and crystal clear carrier film trimmed tightly to each decal. Notwithstanding the pin-sharp printing, the sheets' designers have left nothing to chance and a few of the items (e.g. Swastikas) are produced in two layers for the modeller to align by eye. (Note, these sheets were originally announced for 1/48 scale as well, but due to the lack of currently available E-1's out-of-the-box in that scale, they are now 1/32 scale only until further notice.)

The breakdown of each set is identical, with the decals spread over two sheets - unit insignia, individual aircraft markings and stencilling on one, and national insignia on the second.

The instructions are printed on good quality stock and feature colour side profiles for each scheme, smaller plan views and a line-drawing (actually of an E-3) for the stencil placement guide. Each scheme is backed up with a very useful brief description that explains the colours, dimensions of the national markings and any details specific to that aircraft. A reference is provided in each case to where photos can be found.

Colour Schemes

EC#120
1. "Yellow 14", 6.(J) Trägergruppe 186
2. "Yellow 12", 6./JG 26
3. "Yellow 3", 6./JG 52
4. "Black <", Lt. Josef "Pips" Priller, Stab I./JG 51

EC#121

2. "Red 1", Oblt. Gert Framm, 2./JG 27
3. "Red 16", Oblt. Fritz Losigkeit, 2./JG 26
*4. "Yellow 12", 9./JG 52

EC#122
1. "Yellow 12", Fw. Ernst Arnold, 3./ JG 27
2. "White 2", Fw. Paul Boche, 4./JG 52
*3. "Yellow 10", W.Nr. 6352 6./JG 54
*4. "Black 13", 2./JG 77

You'll notice that I've marked several of the schemes with an asterix (*). That's because, despite being E-1s, they have been fitted with the late-style canopy which isn't included in Eduard's kit. So, if you have your heart set on these particular Emils, you'll have to source your own canopy or wait for Eduard's 'E-4, due out in an May, to do a bit of cross-kitting.

Conclusion
As usual, Eagle Editions have come up with top quality decals for some very attractive alternative colour schemes. Highly recommended.

Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.
SUMMARY
Highs: Beautifully printed alternative markings, complete with full national insignia and stencilling.
Lows: Eagle Editions are actually ahead of Eduard with several of the chosen schemes, so you'll have to wait for the late-style canopy if you want to model them.
Verdict: Another great set of EagleCals, timed perfectly for anyone looking for extra colour schemes beyond the standard Eduard kit.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
