Introduction
When Classic Airframes released a new tool Do 17Z kit earlier this year, I was surprised that the kit didn't included markings for at least one German aircraft. While I understand the marketing strategy behind that, and while I have nothing against Finnish markings, it was a bit frustrating and I decided to wait for a second release of the kit which will almost certainly include markings for a Luftwaffe plane.

For those who can't wait, aftermarket decals are mandatory. Fortunately Techmod have a nice reference in their catalogue for the "Flying Pencil" which includes three marking options... all German!

The decals
Techmod's Do 17Z decal sheet is bagged within a small resealable bag and nice color instructions are included. The decals in themselves do not call for any observations being well printed and in register. A full set of stencils is also included. The instructions are quite nice but I noticed that the underside color for all options is shown as a grey color while it should be light blue. In fact the color references are exact (RLM 65) but not the color shown, so be careful not to paint the underside of your model in grey if you happen to use this decal sheet. The upper surface RLM 70/71 looks better though...

Marking options
Decals are provided for three aircraft:

1 - 5k HU, 10 (Croatian) KG3, Russia, December 1941. The aircraft wears a white winter camouflage uppon the standard RLM 70/71 upper colors, yellow tactical markings and a Croatian emblem.
2 - F1 AT, 9/KG 76, Corneilles-en-Vexin, July 1940. Interesting option for those who want to do a Battle of Britain aircraft. It wears the standard RLM 65/70/71 camouflage, a small yellow fuselage band and a squadron emblem.
3 - U5 DL, 3/KG2, 1941. This aircraft wears some interesting yellow tactical markings on the engine cowlings and the rudder, as well as a small yellow band on the nose. There is also an emblem on the nose. There is no location given for this aircraft on the instructions but it could have been stationed in Greece at that time.

Apart from the grey/blue mistake, the painting and decaling guide is rather clear and gives Federal Standard equivalents.

Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AeroScale.
